About "Beck," a visitor to the Villages
I confess I have not the foggiest notion of how to get into a conversation in this forum, and who might respond. But, here's my question. Maybe it will show up somewhere: What do people think of the guy who was on the square yesterday unveiling his "plan for America"? Is he an activist? A populist? A conservative? A man who wants to be president? Does the Villages ever invite prominent liberals to sign books at Barnes & Noble? (Do not infer from this question that I am a liberal, because I am not. I am better described as somebody who wonders about the political environment in the Villages fostered by the developer and the Daily Sun.) Thanks.

In my opinion...
Quote:
I'm not sure, but I don't think many, if any, liberals are asked to speak here in TV. I've heard that the developers are staunch Republicans, backing Bush and then McCain. Palin will be here shortly. Oh joy! Another gapper's block. Joe Biden found an interesting way around not being invited here. During the Presidential campaign, he pulled up in a Limousine, Secret Service and all and stopped to have ice cream in Spanish Springs. This was a great photo-op, although not invited. Very clever. You will find that this board is mostly very conservative, so you might enjoy it. Maybe not my comments, but most. All of that said, no matter what party, the people in The Villages are extremely kind and wonderful people, be they Conservative or Liberal. I can only think of one couple that kind of stopped interacting with my husband and I after Obama won the Presidency. They act as if "we" personally put him in the White House! hahaha! But, as they say, they were simply fair-weather friends and that just isn't the norm in TV. I can truly say TV has wonderful, fun people here. The general environment is one of joy and good will. If you don't live here yet... you'll love it! |

Let me assure you that there is NO ".. political environment in the Villages fostered by the developer and the Daily Sun.)" THAT is just not true. The folks who visited here recentlyand next week were selling books. 2 of the 3 were part of a Barnes and Noble event. The area votes conservative thus those are the visitors here,,no different than any other area in the country ! |

I am sure that any liberal with a best selling book would be invited. Would they accept? I am not sure. BTW I heard that liberals want a separate New York times Liberal best sellers list because the conservative books are hogging the list. Seriously, I think if you leave out the Democrat / Republican labels and use the Conservative / Liberal labels, you will find that The Villages will reflect the same as the country as a whole. Yoda |

I borrowed the following from yoda's last post:
"Seriously, I think if you leave out the Democrat / Republican labels and use the Conservative / Liberal labels, you will find that The Villages will reflect the same as the country as a whole."
Isn't this how life is lived in all cities of the good old USA? Nobody cares whether there is an R, D etc....it is only in "so called" political discussion that it seems to be a necessary definer (for some). I personally prefer to judge any person on their merits, performance, accomplishments, leadership, responsibility, personality and lastly trustworthiness. If I left any other notable attributes out it wasn't by design. If people happen to fall into a category like R, D, black, brown, yellow, et al then it is after the fact. To characterize and categorize simply based on political belief is sorta like politics itself....not much contributed value. I wonder how the other respective R or D people in respective communities where they are the minority......feel about their community? A rhetorical question as it has no added value....just a little sarcasm.....which I also entertain......occasionally! btk |

OK Lets Agree
I see that Glenn Beck has been called a "buffoon". OK, lets agree, (a) his TV show draws more viewer than all the liberal shows combined, (b) he drew somewhere between 15,000-25,000 to his talk on Saturday, the higher number being the equivelant of about 40% of the poplulation of The Villages,
(c) his actions have brought about a watchdog group called "Tea Party" that watches out for everyone not just the liberals, and (d) he at least has formulated a plan to return america to it's citizens and away from being socialistic. Has anyone read the terrible problems with the UK social medical practices, read that now only 38% of America favors the health plan of Reid and Pelosi, Now if all of this is the same as being a "buffoon" then please bless America with more buffons. |

Memory serves, Caroline Kennedy did a talk at the Savannah Center last year. Not really a conservative.

Few simple facts on Glenn Beck
Before trashing Beck; a little research on the man will provide the following facts.
He is a Libertarian, not a Conservative...and holds equal disdain for Bush and Obama (and the current corruptions of Democrat and Republican parties). He holds both equally responsible for the current state of the economy. He, like many of his supporters believe in the radical theory that government spending must be reduced (not exploded into the mega-trillions) to begin lowering the national debt. With the growing extreme leftness of the majority Democrat party leaders and the moderate wimpy RINO-ness of the GOP leaders it appears Beck may be floating trial balloons for the viability of third party candidates (Libertarian-Conservative) in 2010 and beyond. The estimated attendance at TV event on Sat 11/21 was 25-35,000. |

Audience size
I don't give a hoot who speaks here or engineers a book-selling (uh, book-signing) gig, but the Daily Sun's crowd estimations are blatantly ludicrous.
First, it said that 70,000 people came for Palin -- physically impossible to fit that many at Lake Sumter Landing. AP put the number at 12-15,000. The 7,000 Beck number has been estimated to actually be a little more than half. In either event, the lower numbers are huge in their own right. To absurdly inflate both just adds to the incredibility of this publication. People laugh at it! |
