Noted humorist Dave Barry went through Japan and wrote of his travels in one of his many books. It was all light-hearted and funny until he got to the part about being in Hiroshima on the anniversary. There were all kinds of speakers talking about how this should never happen again, how there should be no more suffering such as the atomic bomb caused.

Even this humorist took a sidetrack from his usual writings to say that he wanted to scream in the middle of the ceremony "Do you not KNOW WHY this happened???". It's like the country had collectively erased everything from the rape of Nanking to Perl Harbor from their collective memory.

Once again, people remember the terrible end and forget what horrible circumstances brought people TO that end. The remember the symptom and forget the diseaase.

I read a book written by a combat infantryman who fought on the last islands before the mainland Japan. It was gruesome. Nobody is an angel in war but some of the things that the American soldiers witnessed was like living in hell. The Japanese were never going to surrender the conventional way without thousands maybe hundreds of thousands dying needlessly.

Those two bombs probably kept the world somewhat peaceful for the last 65 years, meaning no real superpower has dared to engage.

God help us if some renegade country develops and uses a bomb of that magnitude in the future.

Take a look at the beautiful modern city that Hiroshima is today. Where is the thousands of years of radiation poisoned ground that I always heard about?
Compare the pictures of modern Hiroshima to pictures of present day Detroit and tell me why Detroit looks like I would imagine Hiroshima to look like. I say this comparison in an email and was surprised to say the least.
Of course Detroit shows you what modern day Liberalism gets you.

I remember the show "Salvage One" - short-lived series after a successful tv-movie. The protagonists find a 'leftover' Japanese soldier on a South Pacific island who doesn't know the war is over. After taking most of the episode to capture the guy, they're flying him back to Japan. As they fly over some very prosperous looking cities, the soldier comments:

"Are you sure we *lost* the war?"
