Re: I might have to sell my villa before I get to TV.
Independent radio stations have always purchased national/regional news broadcasts (on the hour) as an economy measure. It's cheaper than maintaining their own news crew and if the station's format is all music or sports or anything other than all-news, it makes sense.
Independent stations, as a business decision, periodically change the hourly news provider based on who gives the best deal. So, looking for a subliminal political message out of WVLG's business decision to get a bigger bang for its buck is really pushing it. Fox is expanding into the independent radio market and obviously just made the deal too good to pass. |

Re: I might have to sell my villa before I get to TV.
Bill Kristol, a neo-conservative in Washington quote ‘The press isn't quite as biased and liberal. They're actually conservative sometimes,’ Kristol said recently on CNN. Kristol told The New Yorker. ‘The whole idea of the 'liberal media' was often used as an excuse by conservatives for conservative failures.’”
Conservatives are extremely well represented in every facet of the media. The correlative point is that even the genuine liberal media are not so liberal. And they are no match--either in size, ferocity or commitment--for the massive conservative media structure that, more than ever, determines the shape and scope of our political agenda. In a careful study published in the academic journal Communications Research, four scholars examined the use of the "liberal media" argument and discovered a fourfold increase in the number of Americans telling pollsters that they discerned a liberal bias in their news. But a review of the media's actual ideological content, collected and coded over a twelve-year period, offered no corroboration whatever for this view. The obvious conclusion: News consumers were responding to "increasing news coverage of liberal bias media claims, which have been increasingly emanating from Republican Party candidates and officials." The right is working the refs. And it's working. Much of the public believes a useful but unsupportable myth about the so-called liberal media, and the media themselves have been cowed by conservatives into repeating their nonsensical nostrums virtually nonstop... The right wing propagada machine has been able to convince us of these myths; 1. have helped create the myth that social security is failing, paving the way for the realization of one of the right's political wet dreams: privatization of social security 2. perpetuate conservative myths about wellfare and simultanously turn a blind eye to corporate wellfare 3. sensationalize street crime and ignore corporate crime 4. treat religious right groups such as the Promise Keepers with kid's gloves and thus help legitimize them in the public perception. Generally avoid reporting on the lunatic fringe of the right, such as militias, neo-Nazis and anti-abortion terrorists, and in particular, avoid examining the personal and ideological connections these groups have to the Republican party 5. created the perception that there is widespread popular opposition to affirmative action when in fact most people support it 6. all but ignore waste, mismanagment and corruption in the military-industrial complex, especially as it relates to the planned missile defense system 7. downplayed protests against the IMF, the World Bank and the WTO by portraying protestors as leftist fringe groups, communists and anarchists 8. report corporate PR as legitimate scientific research. |

Re: I might have to sell my villa before I get to TV.
I read the Wall St. Journal and the NY Times, and feel that I get a fair balance of perspectives from those. The radio pundits really turn me off.

Re: I might have to sell my villa before I get to TV.
Hmm. I thought the Villages radio station was just good news and all about the Villages? I sure don't remember hearing the bad news while listening to it? I can listen to the bad news on any other station... Or do I just not remember correctly? This happens to me a lot these days. ???

UU,
They allow the "real world" to invade our protective bubble for 3-5 minutes every hour...then it's back to the moldy oldies (tunes, that is). Actually, for our own little hometown radio station, they are enjoyable to listen to. Sure is a bonus to have our own 'retired' government/military weather forecasters....talk about getting localized forecasts!!! |

Re: I might have to sell my villa before I get to TV.
Thanks, Villager07.
I guess I didn't pay attention during those few minutes every hour. I can't remember things like I used to, I don't pay attention, and now I just discovered that I accidentally ventured into this political talk area. I didn't mean to come here. ttfn! |

Re: I might have to sell my villa before I get to TV.
This is a country of "freedom of speech" and a country that gives us the choice of whether to listen or not. I don't care whether the news is to my liking or not. Whether I agree or not, at least I can listen to all points of view. Not many countries provide the citizens with this choice.
We need to be grateful living in a country that provides us with communication...and choices. |

Quote:
Red....while I agree that the majority of people that live in TV's are republican, I will say that I think there are more Democrats here then you may know about....however...I think most of us just love TV's so much that we don't make a HUGE deal over the fact that the Republicans have it here....we just live our lives...believe what we believe and continue to love the community that we chose to live in...ragardless of who believes in what.... There is certainly enough room for all of us to live here, love living here and enjoy our lives and each other...whether we are Republican or Democrat or Independent or Green or etc....just as we are all of different religious beliefs, different sizes, different colors and different reasons why we chose to live here.... My point is that we can all turn OFF the radio station if we want....and we can all live here whether we agree or disagree....it's a choice we have made Republican or not...isn't taht what America is all about? Isn't that what we want TV's to be about? |

Re: I might have to sell my villa before I get to TV.
Cologal, don't sell your villa! There are some of us out here with open minds! Seriously!
Now, I'll get slammed! IMHO Fox News is and has always been a joke. Who else would hire Geraldo Riveria? Bucco, you use the word "fear" and "scared" alot and for that I'm truly sorry. I believe "unfounded fears" are called Phobias. Some kind of anxiety disorder? Well, if you do need help for this, I hope you have a Health Care plan that can cover it. It's a shameful thing that there is even one homeless person, hungry child, or person that cannot go to a doctor because they can't afford it, living in this country. It's a shameful thing indeed. |

Re: I might have to sell my villa before I get to TV.
Bucco, I apologize if I ruined the board for you. That certainly wasn't my intention. After this one, I won't respond to you further. But just to set the record straight, are you calling me an Elitist? You're the one that has a problem with anyone disagreeing with you. I'm probably one of the least judgmental people you'll ever come across. I'm a liberal, remember?
I have tried to answer your quest for the issues. I have tried to joke with you. But I have never dismissed you. Until now. Dismissed. |
