You can assume that I don't bill for all the time I spend here at the base (never mind the work-related research I do on my own time) - it's more hassle than it's worth if I tried to bill more than 40 hours in a week but I'm not one of those '80 hour' people anymore.. Don't get me started on the expenses I've paid out of my own pocket because of the red-tape here to try and get them to buy something as simple as a $300 software toolkit. You can also assume that I do several things that are not in my job description here because SOMEbody has to help the user community and there are too many people here who have the "sorry, that's not my table" attitude. It's hard not to roll one's eyes occasionally when I see the guy who appears to have, as his job, a duty to watch all streaming videos from MSNBC.COM (but that's certainly not what his title on his cube says). That's another issue entirely.
Me? I write websites. That's what I get judged by. That's what I'm paid to do and I do it, according to my users, pretty well.
There's more that I could say to put things in perspective (I divided the US budget by my salary to see how much in taxes have to be paid before I see the first penny) - but my point was to highlight the fact that there's more to the 'headlines' than just the headlines.
