The above comment is important.

Call it Marxism, Socialism or Communism, they are all 'hot button' terms we've been taught to hate, fear or at least be suspicious of since we were little kids. So naturally a thread using those terms to describe the President has a high emotional tone.

History could not be more clear in proving that large scale experiments in communism or socialism do not work. They run counter to human nature by suppressing individuality, the desire to achieve and elements of free choice. But if we are going to be objective, and despite how much we have been taught to love and respect capitalism, in it's pure forms it also has proven unworkable. The founding fathers were certain the American experiment would fail dismally unless there was a government strong enough to insure all of the enumerated rights of individuals.

The United States has always been a blend of capitalism and socialism. Everyone understands and accepts that unless they are so frightened of the word 'socialism' as to be in total denial of it's existence. Law enforcement and the courts, public schools, hospitals, community centers, etc. are just a few examples of socialism, necessary and supported everywhere.

So it is no surprise that the two consensus choices for President in 2012 are both Capitalist/Socialists. The Republican primary electorate would simply not support a real conservative, so the all hopes are now pinned on a 'moderate'. The moderate is one who espouses a good deal of the socialist agenda, not the least of which is government supported and regulated health care delivery system. No amount of emphasis on his experience as a capitalist businessman can change that.

Blowing smoke about "Marxism" and "Socialism" doesn't fool anyone anymore, and when it is part of the agenda of Romney supporters, it makes others hesitant to align themselves with a candidate who appeals to such extremists.
