One Sumter
I found this on Channel 9's web site. Be sure and vote in November to keep One Sumter.
SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. -- Do voters in The Villages have too much control? Some smaller towns say they don't have enough representation, because The Villages has grown too big. The towns have managed to get a referendum on the November ballot to change how Sumter County commissioners are elected. Some say you can divide Sumter County into two sections, The Villages and everywhere else. Some of the folks who live "everywhere else" say they have no political voice. Where ever John and Lucille Shoup go, their big sign goes with them. "Every time we go to a commissioner meeting, it's 5-0, 5-0, 5-0, 5-0," John said. The Shoups have a beef with the way Sumter County commissioners are elected. It's currently by a county-wide vote. The Shoups are part of an effort to return the system to single-district voting to give residents in smaller towns like Wildwood equal representation. "Decisions that are being made, I don't believe are being made in the best interest of the citizens of Sumter County. They're being made in the best interest of the developer [of The Villages]," said John Campbell, Reverse One Sumter. Of Sumter County's nearly 60,000 registered voters, more than half live in The Villages and the ones Eyewitness News talked to believe the majority should continue to rule to better control county spending. "Because they burn us otherwise. They have the vote. They vote and we pay all the taxes. They can vote us to pay everything," said The Villages resident Les Fox. The debate has gotten lots of local news coverage, but some complain that the Daily Sun newspaper, published in The Villages, is not fairly presenting both sides. "It makes people outside The Villages sound like they're good-ole-boy rednecks," Lucille Shoup said. "The people that don't live in The Villages are being taken advantage of by the county commission." Eyewitness News visited the Daily Sun newspaper offices, but the editors were not available to talk. They also did not respond to a request for an interview. |
