Bottom line is that no one likes an overly moderated forum, and the Moderators do not want to either. I think there is a lot of room for healthy, passionate debate without being disrespectful. As long as folks swim in those common sense respectful waters, no lifeguard should be needed. All is good.

You make my case Frank......if someone takes something wrong and reports it to you and you agree with them...bang..something happens and my comment was not aimed any person.

Common sense and RESPECTFUL is the way...you are correct

Sounds like "Political Correctness" run amuck. Nothing wrong with heated debate and expressing of opinions.

IMO....this is one quick way to kill off a website. It's not broke, so stop messing with everything.

It is common etiquette on most forums if the author of a thread request it to be closed the administration will honor that request. That is not viewed as a censorship on ones opinions or that Admin/Moderator is taking a position on a thread or moderating it. Just a courtesy to the user.

If you want or have a thought or discussion you would like to make or start you are free to begin a new thread that YOU are the author of.

Political Forums are 'opt in' and as mentioned our intentions are to be involved with moderating as little as possible. If you don't like a particular user's perspective you can go into your usercp and add them to your ignore list and you won't have to be bothered with them or their opinions which is better than insulting your neighbor.

Is it possible to reveal just why, other than new ownership, there has been the shift to moderating with closing, removing AND editing of thread content?
We endured the minority fussing that led to opting in and many of us got over it and many left.

So what precipitated the new wave of control (for lack of a better term)?

As I have said previously I do not condone some of the personal sniping that occurs by a very few, however, I also personally do not think it is right for those who do not like what they see, or usually think they see or what is said or what one thinks was said have the ability to "report" their interpretation or object to what they think was said....and even when something offensive is actually said.

In the past posters were summarily warned/cautioned about tone/intent/etc. And some posters were banned. And there was a rare closing of a thread.

So what caused the need for the current moderating agenda? I am not being argumentative or rebelling in my line of questioning...just curious.
