"Most people are explicitly racists," he says. "In parts of the world — so called educated, so-called western society — we've learned that it is not polite to be racist, and so often we don't express racist views, but nevertheless I've given lectures on this subject, and members of the National Academy of Sciences come up to me afterwards and say, but native Australians, they're so primitive. Racism is one of the big issues in the world today. Racism is the big social problem in the United States."

So why are people racists? According to Jared, racism involves the belief that other people are not capable of being educated. Or being human — that they're different from us, and they're less than human. It was through his work in New Guinea for the last 30 years that convinced him that it's not true. "'They' are smarter than we are," he says. But perhaps the main reason why people resort to racist explanations, he notes, is that they don't have another answer. Until there's a convincing answer why history really took the course that it did, people are going to fall back on the racist explanation. Jared believes that the big world impact of his ideas may being in demolishing the basis for racist theories of history and racist views.

I seek the truth about everything in this universe but human kind is so limited. for example you offer a reading by Jared Diamond, yet in his third paragraph he begins "In his new theories of human development".... Science is fascinating and scientist have made great contributions to mankind but so much is still theory, guessing, trying to fit fossil finds into a great puzzle to explain man's evolution...if man really evolved.

Scientist vacillate on so much because science is settled under the next discovery comes along. Heck they can't even agree on what constitutes a healthy diet.

So over the years I have been conditioned to react to news of a new scientific discovery that its fact today but what about tomorrow?

As a whole these "people" just can't make it in a modern western society. Native American Indians, most of them never made it in "white" society and they "live" like cattle on reservations. Central American Indians who they've tried to bring out of the jungles and into modern societies don't prosper. Not until several generations of mixed breeding. Blacks have never moved out of poverty and violence. Africa today has genocide and slavery. All this talk is just that...talk. SHOW me successful blacks. Show me a tribe brought out of the Amazon or New Guinea who is thriving. They're not. You're peeing on my leg and you're telling me it's raining. We've become, through isolation, different species, like Darwins finches. Each specialized and different. We refuse to admit it and work WITH it, instead, we fight our strengths and weaknesses.

There IS something to be said about Neanderthal DNA in ALL human populations except negroids. Maybe the hybrid became just a little smarter, a little more ambitious. We're as close to chimpanzee DNS as we are to non-hybrid negroid DNA. Closer in some cases. It's said "we" have between 1-5% Neanderthal DNA, we're only 2% removed from Chimps.

I'm NOT saying blacks are chimps, I'm saying there is diversity in DNA among humans. I'm saying maybe the Neanderthal DNA added something critical that "we" have and they don't.

I'm saying there are genetic differences, physiological differences, psychological differences, ALONG with the skin coloring and the myriad of other physical differences like hair, ears, nose, musculature, bones, etc. There's a reason we look and act so different. It's genetic.

OMG, that was funny as hell...
I am not an activist one way or another. All I want to do is treat people with respect and in turn a person has an obligation to earn respect....

A number of years ago I lived in a southern city still very racially divided. I had a department to run but was confronted with racial issues that divided my employees. So one by one I sat with each employee trying to promote a collaborative team essential to reach the department's goals.

All of my employees were polite but I felt less than honest, except one and his reply concerning blacks was "they all sub-human". His remarks awaken me to what I was dealing with so my coaching approach ceased and I made it clear to all of them that their personal bias had no place in our office. If I found their personal bias interfered with the accomplishing of department goals it was a performance failing . The subject of my efforts revolved around a young black man I hired who had a master's degree as did his wife.

As I stated I am not an activist. My parents taught me to be fair and honest and judge people based on their behavior/merit . This employee was a good man seeking upward mobility. He left this city, his wife's home and they returned to his northern roots.

People must earn respect. he did. Let me end by referencing the myraid reality shows on television which include people of all races. do you think they have earned your respect? do they behave the way they do because of their color? Plainly speak trash comes in a variety of colors,economic-social backgrounds

In that same vein color should not be a reason for preferential treatment as to education, promotions, etc and in that the government missed the mark with overreaching goals that went from equal opportunity to equal outcomes. and that in my view is the "rub" for many people

But a house divided cannot stand and we all better learn how to get along
Can we ?

You want the "truth", them open your eyes and look around. We ARE being lied to about race.

A LOT of the "social sciences" is just plan garbage. Politically correct garbage.

Even though the bias was true? Be honest, how would you "rate" the effectiveness of the two groups? Would you have rather have had just one type working for you...be honest.

TV has all races because they were FORCED to show all races. And now, with so many on welfare and being "easy marks", they're advertised to to get some of that easy money. It has nothing to do with them earning respect.

They don't behave as they do because of their color, color is just ONE difference of thousands. Color is just an easy way to identify them. The differences run VERY deep.

Sure it does, anyone CAN be "trashy", but they're pretty much ALL trashy.

Yes, that IS the rub...people clearly unqualified moving in via quotas and affirmative action. Makes other hate them, not accept them. Because we ALL know they're NOT our equals.

We're NOT going to "get along", Lincoln said that 150 years ago too, and it's as true today as then. Segregation IS the only workable solution.

There is US history which includes slavery, stealing of Native American lands and way of live and many other misfortunes.

I do not have any problem with the most visible fighter involved in the Underground Railroad on the $20 bill ironically Andrew Jackson will be on the other side. Harriet Tubman

This was absolutely the finest post I have ever read from you!

Your parents, as you said, taught you to judge people based on their behaviour and merit. If you do this with people of colour, try and get over your attitude of the LGBT community. You do not have to agree with it but do try to respect the people as individuals.

Again, excellent posting.

Sure there is. This country was founded on taken land. For their own sake, the natives should have killed us instead of helped us. Agreed? The natives lost their land, their nation, because they let in and helped the very first explorers and settlers. Had they killed them all, at least we'd have been more "civilized" when we eventually found them with vast exploring armadas. What do you think? How much longer could native societies have lasted if Columbus and any later single explorers hadn't returned? 100 years? More? We invaded them, plain and simple.

Being kind destroyed the native americans. We eventually overwhelmed them and took over. They let themselves be overwhelmed until it was too late for them to stop it.

Can't you see the parallel with blacks and Hispanics? We bring them here, we help them, give them BETTER then we give "our own" with affirmative action and government programs.

They will eventually breed us out and change everything. We're letting them take over. Already more "minority" children register for public school than white kids. A 5 year in the making, immigrant baby boom IS happening. It WILL change everything.

It seems all I hear about is black this and black that. The Yahoo front page is FULL of stories about blacks. Our society is slowly changing into "them". Our kindness, like the natives, is slowly killing our culture, our society. Instead of them "invading" violently, we're willingly, even helping them, let it happen.

I want to keep the "white america culture", ways, and looks.

I liked the 50s, MOST women did too. Most women don't want to HAVE to have a career. Many feel they have to because the traditional family is gone. Odds are she won't stay married forever. They need to plan for that.

Mostly, women were treated special. They raised their own kids with the neighborhood women, taught them their values, they didn't pawn off raising their kids on some 3rd world, ESL, immigrant or Lawanda. These minimum wagers are the ones who actually raised their kids. People were convinced via TV that they needed stuff, bigger stuff, better stuff, so women worked.

I liked how towns looked in the 50s. Clean, safe, friendly. Now they're seedy, 3rd world looking, stay aware of your surroundings, dumps. Wildwood didn't always look like it does now. That started in the 60s. Leesburg didn't look as it does now. Diversity is what destroyed these places.

Lets talk honestly about it.

This is a politically correct injustice to the REAL people who founded this nation. If she had taken them all to Canada, maybe I'd agree. This is PC garbage. Feel good crap to appease those who are growing in numbers and becoming restless. The irony is they're biting the hand that feeds them. White people make the world go round. White people make a country successful. White people make a city or town successful. Just look at all the stats, best this, best that...white people. Worst this, last that...black people. None of this around you would be here without white people. The "west" and all it brings is white people. Technology, white people.

Lets talk HONESTLY about it, that's all I ask.

No, actually, we had a 50,000 year head start.

You know, I'd buy that crap IF and a BIG IF...they were successful ANYWHERE. They're not successful here, or there, or anywhere, including africa where they had a lot longer than 400 years to advance while "we" were out exploring the world, figuring out where we wanted to live.

It's BS to stop the REformation...we had one before...of an underclass.

We should have left them in africa. Turned down that "great deal" they were offering at the coast and kept going...

People capture other people and turn them into slaves. That's the way it has always been.

Dear Guest: In all due respect I cannot tell if you are joking or not but I have heard the scenario you lay out spoken by others.

One of the problems here is that people address history based on the social, cultural educational, ideological etc for today but back then its what they did. Another problem is created because of the Rashmon Effect (ie different people view the same events but come away with different versions. Another factor is plain bias. and finally hind sight is 20/20.

In fact your writing supports this argument because you reference the 1950's and all you liked about it. I also share that view but change is inevitable and the most prominent aspect of survival of all species is "their ability to adapt". I do agree that not all change is good but change is the one constant whether we like it or not

Your description concerning native Americans is right in part but as previously stated adapting is key and its not reality to believe that anyone can stop progress. Explorers abound in every nation on earth since the beginning of time, its the human experience, its nature. Florida growth is one small example. How many Floridians, over the years, do you suppose grimiest every time another northern populated their state? But in the long run didn't it better serve Florida and the nation?

Native Americans resisted the inevitable but could have kept their culture and still become a part of a new and exciting nation. Indeed what I found wrong in this story is that the government placed them on reservations instead of providing land etc in the greater community. But its a decision they made and at the time it might have been the best available option?

When it comes to American History too many people today look at the negatives. For instant they see America's history of slavery but its a history of overcoming slavery. University students are taught that our founders, explorers etc were all angry evil white men. However we have English settlers with a history of human right laws beginning with the Magna Carta (circa 1215) the English Bill of Rights (circa 1689), etc that formed a basis of America's common laws, and lay the foundation for the drafting of the three Charters of Freedom.

So I do get a little miffed when someone slams America because while not perfect the rule of law prevails, freedoms abound and in the end justice prevails.

I do agree that progressives over reached on the black issue. But what you should not neglect to notice is that many blacks have come to understand that and as Jason Riley states to progressive please stop with the help your killing me. There are many people like Jason Riley who speak up for course correct on many issues thanks to our First Amendment rights.

In my view America is not perfect but then nature has never built anything that was perfect but this nation comes the closest to perfection that can be found on God's green earth and we must treasure it and find a way to get along with one another.

Personal Best Regards:

It was the beginning of big business. White privateers went to Africa and bought slaves from other blacks, returned to America and sold them at a profit. Before I get screamed at by a liberal, I am being just a bit facetious.

But, actually the first slave owner was a black man from Virginia. Oh, and by the way, he also owned white slaves and black slaves.

Everyone seems to forget that slavery was introduced and thrived in the Southern Colonies by virtue of the endorsement and encouragement of the British Monarchy .
The vast number of years during which sadly slavery became rooted as an institution in what is today the US was under the control of the Monarchy .
It took until after the War of 1812 for our very young and untested system of centralized self-government began to establish itself . Finally 5 decades later the ugly
practice of the enslavement of human beings became regarded as so repulsive that citizens went to war against it .

When did slavery begin? Long before the bible much less the New World. Any fool knows that without Wikipedia.

Bull...a very few were repulsed by it.

People didn't want slavery because slave owners undercut prices because of their cheap labor. "Free States" came about because white people didn't want to have to compete with slave labor.

Slavery didn't end, and wouldn't have ended, without mechanization, machinery, engines, doing the work of hundreds.

Without the overhead of having people to take care of.

The "history" is wrong, the "why" is wrong. It's written to make us feel good about our nation. So we support it, like a sports team. Slavery ended because it was cheaper to end it.
