Things to Do After a Car Accident

A car accident is an experience no one wants to go through, and when it does happen, no one is really prepared. Even the minor fender bender can be a frightening experience, and it can place you in a position of figuring out what happened and what to do next. If you find yourself in this position, therse are pieces of advice to follow in the aftermath of an accident from highly rated insurance agents.

Remain Calm and Assess the Situation

Even though it may be difficult to do, it is important to try to stay calm after an accident. Staying calm will help you assess the situation with a clearer mind, and it is smart in this moment to record yourself on your phone detailing the events that led up to the accident, and additional important details.

However, if the accident is serious, it is important to check for injuries quickly for yourself and all parties involved. Immediately call 911 if needed. Remember: Do not attempt to move an injured person until medical personnel have arrived.

If you are hurt, seek immediate medical attention. In addition, pay attention to your body over the next few days to see how you are feeling. Look for signs of lingering pain, discomfort, dizziness, or numbness. It is wise after an accident to see your doctor just in case an injury is present but not noticeable.

Practice Safety Precautions

If it is possible, navigate your car off of the road following an accident. It is safer to get your car off of the road, and away from any dangerous situation. If your car is seriously damaged, just put your hazards on, and if available, put a warning triangle or flare down.

Contacts After an Accident

If you decide not to have the police involved, be sure to exchange insurance policies and contact information with all parties involved. It is required by law to be able to provide proof of insurance. An important note to remember is the sooner you report the accident, the quicker the process will be. Most companies today make it easy to file a claim over your phone.

Don’t Admit Fault

In the immediate aftermath of an accident, don’t admit fault since your statements could come back to get you in the other party files suit. You will want to disclose all facts regarding the accident to your insurance company and the police. The police or an adjuster will determine fault.

Only sign documents for the police or your insurance company. If police are present at the scene, fill out a police report. If police are not present, you can fill out a report at your state motor vechicle’s department.

Take Down all Details

In the aftermath of an accident, take down as much information as you can. Take multiple photos, and note that wider-angle pictures are typically better since it allows insurance companies the ability to zoom in on images. Take as many pictures as you can.

Make sure to take down information and names/addresses from other drivers and witnesses, and take note of the make and model of cars involved.

Is a Tow Required?

When you get car insurance, check to see if the company provides roadside assistance coverage. This will help in any instance if a tow is required. It is helpful to know everything that is covered with your plan as a way to be prepared for the unexpected.
