I bought a gas cart about 2 months ago and recently filled up at the station at Colony Plaza. I know that there have been times when I have smelled gas in the cabin but since filling up this smell has become more prevalent. I was wondering whether the quality of the gas (or some other factor) can cause a change in the gas odor.
Please don't tell me to get an electric cart as I have had 2 of them and decided on gas because of the range realizing that there were some disadvantages to gas like odor and noise. John

I too had these issues, but found it was my fault. I didn't put the gas cap on properly or filled the tank over what is recommended as full. Each time, gas vapors filtered out. I would stop on the path, and check. Corrected the fault and all was right with the world again...

Since having this cart I have only filled it once prior to this last time and didn't notice the problem before so maybe you've hit on the solution. John

John, as long as you don't see a fuel leak anywhere, Tommy's probably right on the mark with his idea.

There you go! You requested no lecture and got one anyway. Why am I surprised?

True, but raw gas smells much different than exhaust fumes.

One problem with some gas carts is the cap has a cork seal. This seal absorbs gas and causes a gas smell in the cabin. Draw a line with a permanent black marker on the tank about 3/4 inch below the top. In the future only fill the tank to that level. This prevents that cork seal from getting soaked with gas and eliminates the smell. I believe they stopped using those in about 2007. I have an 04 and an 09. The 04 has the cork seal the 09 uses some type of rubber (not impacted by gas) seal. Probably a type of neoprene.
Not sure if you could buy a newer gas cap with the new type seal, but the "fill to" line works well also.

John: Some suggestions: 1st-use a middle premium gas in cart, it burns cleaner. 2nd There is a gas additive called STA-BIL (ethanol stabilizer) available at golf cart stores, but much cheaper at Home Depot. i/2 oz. per tankful helps cut down on odor. Finally Yamaha of Ocala has a sound and odor kit for under the seat to help quell noise and smell. Don't know the price. Don't think Yamaha in Villages has it yet. Hope this helps. Carl from Jersey.

I have a Yamaha gas cart 2011. I have a gas smell also, gas not fumes. They put a new gasket on the fuel gauge line & that helped a lot. Now it smells for about 2 day's after I get gas. I do not fill it to the top. Don't know what to do next. Drives my wife nuts.

I had a gas smell also. (2008 Yamaha) the carb float was stuck. Gas (a few drops) would leak out of carb and drip onto the frame beneath, so you won't find any gas on the floor. Tapping on the carb with a screw driver handle seemed to fix the problem.

Your going to want to keep your eye on that. If it leaks excessive, it will fill the motor with fuel and the motor wont crank over due to the engine being full of gasoline. Most of the time it is a simple fix. |
