We currently feed Wellness Senior - a dry food, and add in a a small amount of cooked liver and egg white as nutritional supplements.

On occasion we also add Hills Prescription Diet i/d to aid his Gastrointestinal health.

We have a older, mid sized rescue/shelter dog who was in very poor coat, physical condition and had GI issues when we acquired him.

( Not the dog in our avatar).

Now here 16 months, he is in outstanding coat, great weight and looks great overall.

(Also lots of Vet visits / tests to aid in his improvements)

Default Dog Food

My dogs like Red Barn Rolled chicken and liver. You can get it at the pet store in Southern Trace. I have tried every high end dog food around and they strongly prefer Red Barn. I also give them fresh veggies, fruit, skinned poached chicken breast, salmon, and low fat beef cuts.

Party Animal- wet canned food made in CA. Grain free and low fat. Most is organic sourced.

Blue buffalo sensitive all natural for seniors We buy it at Petsmart, not cheap but well worth it. 14 y.o. yorkie is doing real well on the food. We used to feed him Iams and he was having issues.

We feed dry food twice day to three pets. Both feedings we put in about 1/4 can of Alpo or equivalent and warm water to mix it in. For the evening meal, in addition, we add a scrambled egg.

We mostly buy the grain-free salmon dry food at Costco, but if we run out, in a pinch we buy the grain-free at Walmart to hold us over.

We started out six years ago with Canidae. Then they quietly switched ingredients and added--oh, what, corn/white rice/something. Made Croz and his Rottie friend both sick, so we switched to Dick Van Patten Natural Balance. Also grain free, but had some synthetic vitamins in it. That was fine till once, in a week's time, Crosby's coat went from silk to straw. This was last year. The lady at the Pet Store up by Crispers told me Natural Balance had been bought by DelMonte, who had changed their ingredients sourcing, and some of it was coming from China.

She said her three dogs switched to Nature's Logic, and within three days their coats were soft as down. I was skeptical but bought a small bag, and sure enough, our golden's coat went from straw to silk in three days. Logic has no artificial ingredients or synthetics, and is made with human-grade foods. So like, the chicken in it is the same chicken a human would eat--no beaks or eyes or anu... well, you know.

The other thing is that there is so little filler in this food, he digests so much of it and only poops little cigars. Firm and easy to pick up. That's too much information, huh.

The lady at that store also sells organic meat sourced from Pennsylvania that I buy in logs and mix up with whole hardboiled eggs (shells and all) and add Dinovite, a kelp supplement, to. Both these foods, the Logic and the meat logs, are calorie and meat dense, so if you're not exercising your dog enough, they will gain some weight.

I told Crosby he had to eat less and exercise more. He said, Look who's talkin'!

Oh, and he gets three squirts of Grizzly Salmon Oil in his two daily meals.

CFrance,

You know I tried the Dick Van Patten for one of my dog's who had some allergy issues. You know he had a beautiful coat, but when I put him on that brand he looked terrible. His hair was dry like straw, too, and falling out. He actually had some small bald places and I'm sure they would have been bigger if we had kept him on it.

Acana - It is the first kibble our two Yorkies love. (They used to be very picky eaters and ate only a special raw diet.) We alternate flavors - Ranchlands one month then Wild Prairie (All yummy ingredients). We get all our food & treats from Whole Earth in the Publix shopping plaza next to the hospital on 27/441. They are extremely knowledgeable and carry only healthy products.

We used to give our girls Hills Science Diet. Soon after we moved here, we switched them to Blue Buffalo and they love it. I have never seen them turn their noses up to anything. I believe that they would eat anything that we put before them.

On the recommendation of our vet (Dr. Kelly Vernon - Buffalo Ridge) we feed our rescued wheaten (who had serious thyroid and yeast issues), Dick Van Patten's Limited Ingredient Lamb and Brown Rice. Turns out that many dogs have allergies to chicken fat - which is in many dog foods and treats. Once on the kibble and wet food - yeast disappeared.
We love Dr. Vernon who really understands allergies in dogs. She's very compassionate and their pricing is very, very reasonable.
We also use Mary at Petco for all our grooming. She does a fabulous job on our Wheaten (which are more difficult to keep looking good)...

Our two Boston Terriers have eaten Orajen since we brought them home, four years ago. On their last vet visit, they were in great shape, their coats are shiny and soft and they are very healthy. Orajen comes from the pet store Paws for a Moment. It's made in Canada and is biologically appropriate for dogs. Not cheap, of course, but in the scheme of things, cheaper than expensive vet visits. Definitely DID NOT want a dog food made in China.
