Default Ipads, et al and Live Feeds

I watch these commercials on TV that makes it look like if I have an iPad or (inset device here), I can sit and watch my favorite program, sport game, etc live whenever I want and whereever I want (airport, meeting, etc).

When I did a Google on this, it seems like this is a lie or at least deceptive advertising. According to what I read, I have to have a contract with a service provider (DirectV, Xfinity, etc) to take advantage of this service AND I have to have the necessary contracted service (All NFL games, etc) to get the program. Also after checking out some of these services they are limited in what they deliver - which is no live programming on the regular channels. You only get the reruns.

Can anyone enlighten me in this?

I have an iPad and Comcast. With the "Watch ESPN" app, I can watch live programming on ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN3. The app has selections for different sports and when you select a sport, it shows what is on that day. Since I don't have 3G or 4G capability with my iPad, ESPN is only available if I have WiFi access.

On a trip to Chicago, I was able to watch live ESPN in my hotel rooms via WiFi. (That's because my dear spouse was hogging the TV watching HGTV and getting ideas how to spend money!) Hope she doesn't read this.

Guess who read this thread???

I use my IPad to watch HBO sometimes. Have Xfinity on it, also. With xfinity I can watch programs that have aired, but not live tv. I can watch Netflix, also. Have to be in a WiFi area to do this with my IPad since it does not have 3G or 4G. My phone is 3G and it allows me to watch Xfinity, HBO, Netflix, anywhere. One thing you can do with Xfinity is program your DVR(s) at home, from your device. Technically I could have programmed my home DVRs from Chicago with my phone or I could have used my IPad since it was connected to the hotel's WiFi.

I do believe commercials for these features do mention something about subscribers having these services available to them, but you have to be able to connect either with 3G or 4G if not in a WiFi area.

I have DirecTV and their app allows me to watch 44 channels of live steaming television from my own wifi network - so ONLY in my own house. Channels such as CNN and Golf Channel are accessible LIVE. This is great for watching the golf from on the lanai.

Other functions such as programming the DVR or viewing the guide can be accomplished from anywhere I can connect to the Internet.

Also my Netflix account can be accessed from anywhere an Internet connection is available.

There are 2 new apps for the NBC Olympics in London. My DirecTV account will allow me to log in and watch all the events live and replay them later, also I believe they will show different camera angles of the events. I think all the Olympics can be watch from anywhere with an Internet connection. These apps are NBC Olympics and NBC Olympics Live Extra.

I can view my Cablevision programs on my IPAD provided I have access to a router emitting Cablevision signal. You can be anywhere but you to have an account. Also, I have Netflix which is available anywhere but you have to pay $8/month. One other point you can view these via wireless internet unless you have cellular service on your IPAD.

And you actually got to talk to a real person while you played.
