Traveling with my PC Tower
I would like some advice PLEASE? I am traveling to TV with my PC Tower in the car. I don't want to have the movers move it. Don't want to have it lost. My concern is the COLD as we travel and leave the car as it sits in the extreme cold. (-40 or so at night possibly). Will the cold harm the tower if I wrap it in blankets? Would you have any other suggestions in protecting it?

At -40 it's not the tower I would be worried about, wrap in blanket put in box and seal, if you are that concerned just bring it in at night. At -40 "Are we their Yet" allow to come to room temp for a few days before you fire it up.

I have transported computers between my house in Ohio and kids in Georgia for several years - generally in middle of winter. I always put on floor on back seat, rather than trunk, and have never had a problem. One warning though, would be to let it warm up for several hours after you bring it in to the house, especially the monitor. Highest propensity for problem would be for a circuit card to shake loose a bit, but that shouldn't be a problem - though it could happen. I'm sure you'll get other input. I plan to do the same when I make the final move next year. Ray

I have had no issues.
I travel by car back and forth to Connecticut (cold but not 40 below) as I have to take a Desktop PC with me. My work is dependant on this PC and its not going into the belly of an airplane and its not good carry on material.
I have a large Rubber Maid storage bin I pack everything in, Tower, screen, KB, Mouse & phone. I use towels to protect each compontnt from jostleing and scratching. Works great! As for the cold, I always think that when equipment is in shipment by manufacturer, they receive harsher treatment than I'll ever give them! Your blanket will afford additional protection, but if worried, bring tower into motel room. _ |

This best advise, besides if you bring in room, less chance of your personal Data being stolen, should for any reason someone decide to target your car. even if all you do is wrap it in blanket and tape it with no box. You will be fine, remember every mile south it gets warmer!

The real problem is gonna be condensation. Dont turn it on when it is real cold, let it reach room temp first. If you powered it up while it is cold, water droplets would form and you know what that means. Poof.

Thank you all very much for the advice. I really never thought about doing a back up, so that was good to hear. I was laughing about thinking of my computer "freezing up". LOL I will blanket the tower up in the back seat and HOPE my car is not targeted. I'll be transporting all my important files too. That would be a feast for identity theft. Geeeeeeez Louise!

Sounds like a PIA, but to bring in important stuff to the room would be worth the effort than some one making off with it. Just never know anymore.....

when you need a replacement i would recommend a laptop, they are just as fast and hold as much data but are much easier to take back and forth....gn
