I decided today to install windows 10 on my laptop for training before putting on my desk top.
The download went fine. Then when installing there was a window asking for the product key. I have the original disc that I installed windows 7 with for this laptop. I entered it and it came back stating I could not use that product key and to either try again or get a different key code. I did try again. Same message. I could not find anything helpfull on the Microsoft site or google that adresses this issue. The only thing I can think of is some time ago I did download windows 10 and it did activate. After a few days I decided to go back to windows 7. I am not sure if this would have an effect or not. It should not if microsoft tracks the installations and such. The window states that "...Windows is not activated on this computer..." Exit set up and activate windows......????? I have been using windows 7 on this laptop for years with the key code I have tried. Above my abilities and soon to be tried patience! Any suggestions are appreciated. Wonder why it would ask for product key if it is FREE, as they say.

Are you sure it is asking for the Windows product key, could this be the key for some other software you have on your system?

Try this:
When you get to the screen that wants you to enter the product key, instead of entering the key, hit the button at the bottom that says "SKIP" It might already be activate because you've already activated it from a previous install. Try it. |

Where did you get the key for 7? I assume that you got it from a sticker on the system (meaning OEM).
If you try to "just install" 10, you will get that error. If you do not fully update 7, you will get that error. If you installed 7 and are not fully licensed, you will get that error. Oh, and you cant skip it as was mentioned. If you need them, I have valid Windows 7 Keys for all OEM versions as well as media for all versions of 7 - both 32 and 64. Most common mistake however is installing 7, not licensing it and installing 10 from disk. Best way, install 7, license it and go to Microsofts site and check for updates. |

After some googling, I found on the microsoft web site that I had to re-activate the key code that somehow wound up being shown as not active (even though the operating system was working all this time).
Had to go into control panel, system tools and scroll down to re-activate/deactivate dialogue. Got an acknowledgement back from microsoft stating all was well and active. Clicked the Windows 10 upgrade and ment right through. Thanks for the suggestions. |

So far I have encountered two issues.
I have been unable to make Firefox my default browser. Where it indicates choose a browser it only offers edge as a choice. Second I am still trying to figure out where outlook and my email settings went. It seems like Microsoft is continually trying to have everything go through their account. I will have to Google on my desktop (Windows 7) and find a Windows 10 for dummies! |

As for Outlook - was it on another computer or the one you are on now? |

Also when you tell the browser to be the default, often a windows screen will pop up to verify that you really want it to be default. This is to prevent your default from being changed without you making the decision. If you just click ok, it will not make it default, you have to tell that screen which browser you want to be default.
It's a Windows 10 thing. :-) Wayne Sallee Wayne@WayneSallee.com |
