Default Air Conditioning Coil Question

Hello,

I have question about air conditioning coils.

We had our Trane a/c coil replaced at least a couple times by Sun Kool. Our unit is only 6 yrs old.

Recently we had another a/c company perform annual maintenance on the unit. They told us we have the wrong coil in our unit. Originally we had a 3 ton and a 2 ton has been installed. I notified Sun Kool and they told me Trane told them to install a 2 ton unit. I notified both Trane Distr. and recd conflicting information. One distr told me a 2 ton should be okay and the other one said no. HELP...

Any suggestions of where I need to go with this problem?
Thanks so much.

Get the model and serial #'s off the unit and call Trane directly and ask them for the factory specs.

Ask them to email or mail the info to you.

Then you can go back to who put in the wrong unit if that was the case..

The inside evaporator coil is matched to a specific outside condensing unit. You will need both numbers when you contact Trane. I believe that it is unlikely that a 3 ton
(36,000 BTU) outside unit would have a 2 ton (24,000 BTU) evaporator coil installed.
I think the wrong coil was installed

Was this replacement done under warranty at no cost to you?
If so, it sounds like Trane was cutting costs and taking advantage of you.
I would demand they put the same type that was in the original (no cost to you). If they balk, have a lawyer write them a letter.
You should not be having these problems on a unit that new although a friend had same type problems with Lennox and after 3 tries they never got it right and replaced the whole thing at no cost but the hassle cost Lennox a customer.

Hello,
Good suggestion, BUT Trane Company will not talk to me. They gave me the phone numbers of the 2 distr. for the area. DeSantis & Duncan.
The number I called for Trane was 903-581-3200 Texas.

CaptJohn,
We had 2 coils replaced. Both times the part was under warranty.
The second time the coil was replaced, we ended up paying labor approx $400.00

Jullie, call Chuck Farrell Heating & Air Conditioning 753-9497. Honest, a phone number you'll keep handy and be happy to recommend to your neighbors. He'll tell you exactly what is wrong and what to do. We have the Trane, went thought the coil problems, SunKool , never again.

If it was a 3 ton in it, they should have replaced it with a 3 ton not a 2 ton. They ordered the wrong unit and they are bs ing you. At 2 tons you are not getting the proper cooling you need, its undersized. They dont want to admit their mistake. Always get things in writing when someone is doing anything on your house. An old lawyer told me some time ago, If they can say it ,they can write it. Its for your protection.

Would never want a Trane again. Bought the 10 year warranty when we build and have had every thing replaced. Worked AC down in the Keys and Carrier is the only good one but thats just my opinion.

In 38 years as an HVAC man I've never heard of having the indoor coil being rated at less tonnage than the outdoor unit. The opposite is common (e.g. a 3.5 ton outdoor unit with a 4 ton indoor coil is OK), so something is not right here. Perhaps there is some misinformation?

I am having my complete unit replaced after 9 years. Have received quotes from Munns, Sun Kool and Sunshine. Does anybody have any advice on any of these three

Thanks, Waxman

I got a quote from Sun Kool since they have been my warranty and clean specialists for the past 10 years so I am prone to go with them. I would like to hear about these three also.

Did you ever hear of Angies List. Its a web site that has contractors on it and they are rated by people who have used them. There is a lot of info on it.Will let you know who is very good and the not so good..I saw the ad for it on here. I have also used it.
