Default Florida Veterinarian or Village Vet?

We need a veterinarian and would like to have the office golf cart accessible. Both Florida Veterinarian Hospital and Village Veterinarian are cart accessible and close to our home. Does anyone have any information about either place? If so, any special doctor?

We can drive to any doctor in the area, but would prefer to start with the one we would stay with for many years to come.

Dr. Fox seems competent and the prices seem about average for this area. Our dog has broken a nail twice since we got him and we had to go in to get it taken care of. They do not give him anything to handle the pain so I have heard him in quite a bit of pain while they cut it up high. I do not know if this is standard vet behavior but it is hard to go through. Of course, there is the charge involved in giving him something while he is getting his nail cut in the quick.

They did put him under when cleaning his teeth which now runs around $250.

He got bit by another dog badly about 34 months ago and they got him into see the vet right away. I was in to see the vet as soon as I got there by car. She did a good job treating our dog.

They do not have services available at night or during the weekend which is a problem though. You have to call an emergency vet on such an occasion. Believe the closest associated with Village Vet is in Leesburg. http://www.meowandbowwow.com/contact.shtml

Default I have heard of sky high charges for Veterinary services lately.

Friends and neighbors who have had their pets seen by local veterinarians have reported LARGE bills for somewhat commonplace and not risky procedures and ENORMOUS bills for surgery and procedures requiring sedation. Now I know that everything has gone up, but I am concerned that there is no way to evalute these costs and that sometimes unscrupulous animal doctors may be taking advantage of people who dearly love their pets.

I take my dog to Buffalo Ridge because it is closer for me and it is golf cart accessible. I am very happy there. They have someone who specializes in teeth cleaning without anesthesia who comes there every month - I don't know what the schedule is. The cost is $140 and they won't charge you if your dog doesn't cooperate. Fortunately, mine did very well. I don't like anesthesia. I don't feel that their fees aren't any more than what I have seen. They also have grooming.

I used Villages Veterinary for Bart when he was alive. My only complaint was that they kept changing the primary vet. Some quit and some retired but some they just rotated on us. Not that it mattered to Bart but we got used to him seeing a certain vet.

They did an excellent diagnosis when he was ailing in his later years and even scheduled an appointment for us with the internal medicine services down in Maitland for an ultrasound.

We tried Mulberry but they were more expensive.

The only vet that I know that is actually open on weekends is Summerfield up on 27/441. They also have a mobile service. It was them we called when it was Bart's time and they came out to the house and did the procedure. They also took him and arranged for the cremation and urn.

I digress ... but I would recommend the Village Veterinary for a pet and if I was to get another dog, that is where I would go.

This is new information for me, and VERY helpful. Thanks for sharing.

I have two co-operative animals (a small dog and a 17-year old cat). I'll be taking them in for teeth cleaning as soon as I return to TV. I haven't had their teeth cleaned lately because I didn't want to put them under a general anesthetic.

Sorry Topicop Back to Village Vet versus Florida Vet.

I've bought pet food at both places and the staff at Village Vet seemed cheerier. That is all I know.

Smile Vet

I use House Calls Mobile Pet Clinic. Dr. Fratello and her Vet. tech Robin are the best. The pricing is very reasonable considering they come to your home.(less expensive than the Vet we used in Massachusetts). We have cats and for most procedures (vaccinations, exams, scratched eyes, ear infections, etc) are done in the calm surroundings of your home. They have a full service lab, X-ray and surgical suite in the truck. When cleaning the cats teeth, they use a shorter acting anesthesia so by the time they are back in the house the cat is almost back to normal. We have used Dr. F and Robin for almost 5 years and cannot say enough good things about them. The phone number is
352-815-0404.

Default Thank you!

Thanks for the replies. I think it is so much better to go somewhere that is recommended than just to pick from the phone book. Just makes me feel more comfortable about the choice. The dentist I go to was mentioned on this board several times, and you were right. She is great! Thanks again! Pat

Zcaveman

The vet you mentioned (open on weekends) is called Summerfield, or is it called Country Oaks. I did a search on the internet and cannot find a vet practice called Summerfield. I realize Summerfield is the name of the town. Could you provide me info? Thanks.

Sorry - It is Country Oaks in Summerfield. I should have looked it up before I typed.

Default New Vet and New Groomer!

Thanks to replies on this thread, we hope we have found the right vet and groomer for years to come.

We did go Village Veternarian Clinic today. Both our Yorkies were groomed and then seen by Dr. Fox. We think we will be happy there and it is golf cart accessible, actually quite close, to our home.

I do hope the ladies (Yorkies) feel the same way.

Now, on to find a cardiologist!

Thanks again!
Pat
