Default Has Anyone Had A Water Hammer Arrestor Installed?

I have a water hammer noise.....where the pipes rattle near my shower whenever the toilet is flushed, the kitchen faucet is shut off, or the washing machine water shuts off. I had a plumber (who came across as not being very confident) tell me they would have to cut the drywall out and install a water hammer arrestor by the shower. I had the people who make these arrestors tell me that you have to put one near each thing causing the water hammer....i.e. the toilet, the kitchen faucet, the washing machine and that you do not have to cut out the drywall to do it. We are not handy so we do not know what is right. Any ex-plumbers out there know?

I did install one years ago up north, haven't had the need here in the Villages, but they do work well, and from what i remember, easy to install

Smile Ask B&BIII

I believe that technically speaking the houses in The Villages already have a water hammer arrester, and it is likely that yours has failed.

There is an in-line container installed above the water heater that contains a bladder that expands and contracts with the changes in water flow in the house. When the diaphragm in that container fails the changes in water flow in the house surge. In the case of my house, the result was the water valves to the toilets and kitchen sink were gradually pushed closed, slowing the flow of water.

I strongly urge you to send a Private Message to B&B III Home Services , an advertiser on this site, and ask for an opinion. He diagnosed my problem correctly and recommended a particular plumber who did the repair quickly and at a fair price.

I think it is likely that you have need of repair of this item, and it may correct your problem.

Good luck.

What you describe sounds like it may be more easily repaired by other (cheaper or free) methods besides a plumber. If you could isolate the exact area in the wall where it bangs, likely a simple pipe strap to secure it and/or piece of pipe insulation will stop the noise. Yes, you'd have to open up the wall to view and repair but there are some very skilled wallboard guys around.

Easier still, and worth a try first would be to turn off the water to the house, open ALL faucets both hot and cold to let air into the system, re-close them and slowly turn the water back on.

Sounds like that will trap air at every outlet until they are all opened and could trap air at high points that will not be released.

Not all homes in TV have the air bladder installed above the hot water heater. Ours doesn't...we have individual air hammer arrestors installed at all outlets.

We replaced the surge tank above the water heater for about $40. The bladder was shot. Neighbor doesn't have a surge suppressor near the tank, just one each (h&c) at the clothes washer.
