Has anyone had kitchen trash cans installed similar to those at the web site below?
Do I need to go to a Kitchen store to have something like this installed? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, I did it myself, by ordering a kit from Rev-a-shelf. All I had to do was remove the original wood cutout (large trash, small garbage) and replace with the new wood (2 large trash). The kit came with new trash containers. Took about 10 minutes, and used the original slides. This was very easy, and as I recall the cost was around $100 with shipping.

We also have the Rev-a-shelf from Lowe's that we just mounted inside the cabinet next to the sink. Didn't require any cabinet door changes and it was very simple to install. We use the front one for garbage and the back one for recycle. We've had it for a couple years now and is still perfect. The cabinet we use is wide enough that we can store the trash bags right there as well.

That is exactly what we have in our home. We had our house built here in The Villages, and after having this set up in our Utah home, we knew we wanted the same thing here. We have white cabinets and the trash can/recycling cans are located between the refrigerator and the sink.

It is a great set up!

Thanks everyone! Rev-a-shelf sounds like what I want! Will Lowe's install them? My hubby is not handy so I am looking for suggestions for someone to hire?
The last handyman I hired was very nice but made a woopsie while installing something. Thanks again!

I built mine myself. Removed cabinet door, built a frame from 1 X 3 stock the correct size to hold two trash cans. One for trash and one for recycle. Added soft close draw slides and mounted the cabinet door back to the frame. About $25 for lumber and slides and an hours time.

Looks nice, but I don't know that I'd want to give up the cabinet space.

Order the kit, and if I recall correctly there are 6 screws from the sliders to the wood insert, remove the screws, remove the wood insert, install the new wood, and reinstall the screws in the predrilled holes.

I can remember when we bought our house in 1998 in Baltimore, our RE agent gave us a $50 gift certificate to Lowe's. We purchased a single can pull out for about $30 and I installed in about 30 minutes. We were still using it when we sold the home in 2011, it was very handy.

Don't pay those expensive prices, go to the link below and see what they have at Lowes. The one we had is similar to this, this is $35.



Here's a double can version for $60. Don't get a unit that requires attaching the door, leave the door where it is and just get a pull-out unit. This unit would be simple to install.



See all Lowes has to sell, remember veterans get 10% off at Lowe's. If link doesn't work, just go to Lowe's and search for inside cabinet pull out thrash can.

We have a similar two bin trash can cabinet in our home in Michgian. I asked about putting a trash bin cabinet in our home when we built our TV home in 2012. The Design Team wouldn't let us do it at that time. I bought a stainless 2 bin unit that I placed next to my pantry. I will have to look into converting one of our cabinets when we are in TV in the fall!

We've had a double trash drawer for years and if given the choice, would not have one where you had to open the door and then pull the can out. It's much more convenient to just open the cabinet door and have the can come out with it. We've never had a problem and I don't know why you are saying to never have one like that.

I may have confused everyone with what I was trying to achieve. This is exactly what I had in mind.
If you look at the site below - make sure you read the reviews. They are very discouraging. My review would read, "When I saw the picture on the box, I new this was what I wanted but my sanity kicked in and I just bought a metal can and called it a day."

My villa did not come with any trash can area therefore, I would have to take off the current cabinet door, then remove the shelf, then install the new unit. First I would have to find the tool box and a drill of course. I am sure if I stuck my head into a cabinet with a drill, my guardian angel would tap me on the shoulder and say . . . don't forget your reading glasses.

I have really enjoyed reading all of your suggestions. Which is one of the reasons I love this forum.

The OP said her and her husband were not mechanically inclinded. Yes, the system with the door as part of the unit would be more convenient, however with convenience comes extra work. In fact, the next post down the OP replied,

It's the old phrase, KISS "Keep it simple stupid" a metal step thrash can was the best answer. This is what we have in our CYV kitchen as well, works great and doesn't take up a lot of space.

When I bought my home, I hired a guy (he advertises in the Sun) to convert all the lower cabinets and the pantry to pull-out shelves. That same guy converted one of the cabinets to the double trash/recycling unit that the OP asked about. He did a great job and my husband did not need to get involved. I like being able to pull the door open and the trash cans slide out with it. Very handy.
