I would like a flag pole installed in the front yard of my patio villa. Can anyone direct me to a company or individual to do the work? And, what should I expect to spend?

Two options I am aware of. There is a flag store on 441, south of 466 on the east side of the highway going south. They have a good selection of poles and accessories including the light you will need to maintain it at night. Second option is at Market of Marion, Outdoor Products Unlimited, Booth 147-149, D Row south. Again, he has multiple sizes and quality poles and accessories. Not sure if he does lights as well. I have one of his 20ft top of the line poles, which he installed. I originally used landscape lighting and after a while d4ecided it was not of the intensity I wanted, so had the 441 flag store install a light on my yard pole which works great, looks good and completes the project. Price range is $100 - $300, depending on pole you select. Light is not an option however unless you take down daily as US Code requires that the flag be lit at night.
Wish there were more flag poles in The Villages, but these gentlemen seem to do a good business. |

Can you furnish a link to the governing US code?

Found it (thank you Wikipedia)
"The United States Flag Code establishes advisory rules for display and care of the flag of the United States. It is Chapter 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code (4 U.S.C. § 1 et seq). This is a U.S. federal law, but there is no penalty for failure to comply with it and it is not widely enforced — indeed, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that punitive enforcement would conflict with the First Amendment right to freedom of speech. This etiquette is as applied within U.S. jurisdiction. In other countries and places, local etiquette applies." There are a lot of points in the code that aren't followed. .

lynn222 - when you go to look at the various flagpoles - consider getting one of the telescoping poles - they are easily raised/lowered with the slip of a pin - and you don't have to wonder if it is going to bend/snap in the winds! we have one here in nj and we wouldn't have any other.

We have a flag mounted from the garage wall with a flag kit aluminum pole that is about five foot long. Last Spring heavy winds bent the pole to a 90 degree angle at the mount. I later cut off the bottom 6" or so of the pole and put the flag back up again.
(another rule in the flag code says that flags aren't to be out in the rain) .

Do you need any permits or permission from The Villages? Is there any set back requirements?

In regards to the light issue, I have seen two solutions other then installing a floodlight on it.
One is a solar powered light that attaches to the pole just below the flag. Another option now is they have LED flagpole tops that are hard wired with regular 110 voltage that shines right on the flag from the ball above without shining on anything else. In my opinion, for lighting this is the way to go. There is a very nice guy that lives just south of Leesburg off of Hwy 27 in Spanish Village. He has done flagpoles over 100 ft high, down to small telescoping ones. He stocks them and installs them if you want. I forgot his name off hand, I'll try to find it... Frank

Hi Lynn:
I went with Terry at the Markets of Marion. I bought a flagpole that is made in the U.S. I did visit the store on 441 and he has nice products too. Terry is a Marine so that tipped the scales for me. LOL I got a solar powered light that mounts on top of the pole and "illuminates" the flag quite well. I also got a telescoping pole as suggested. Besides coming down to about 6" for inclement weather the flag can go around the pole without getting tangled up in anything. Hope this helps. I think if you go with any of the three you would be happy. George |

Greg,
You have to run an electrical line to the pole and up inside the pole. They also have solar powered ones. I"ve looked at different ones, as I plan on adding one once I'm there full time. I like the heavier spun aluminum ones.......I'll install it myself. There are many places online that have all the info.. Frank

I had a flood light installed on my post light and wired so the dusk to dawn controls when the flag light is on. Works great!

We have a telescoping pole with a solar light that installs above the flag. When the flag moves the light moves with it! We just bought a flag from the guy on 441 that commemorates 9/11. It's a beautiful flag .I get emotional when I look at it!!
