We are going to be buying all five appliances: gas stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer. Does anyone have any appliance they think is so superior I need not look any further? I was told LG is the way to go on washer and dryer but does anyone have any information on how they do with gas stoves, refrigerator and dishwasher?

To me, appliance quality is a crap-shoot anymore. A number of formerly 'reliable' brands have been acquired by different companies and in many cases, quality has suffered as a result.
We've got all GE Profile kitchen appliances at our home in OH. Not their premier line but still not cheap stuff by any stretch. Fridge has acted up intermittently since new. No sense in calling someone out to try to diagnose the problem when it acts up as the problem soon goes away. Maytag Bravos washer and dryer here as well - the main circuit board in the washer went belly up soon after the warranty was up. No relief offered via Maytag. Diagnosed the problem myself and replaced the board - saved a bunch of money, I'm sure. But we were still out $200 for the board alone. Some people have had good recent experiences with different brands. Again, it's a bit of a crap-shoot nowadays - just pick whatever has the features you like and roll with it! JMHO - - - Bill ![]() |

Yes it really does seem to be a crap shoot. Wish I could get at least two people to say they think a particular appliance is reliable.

In our MI home we have the most wonderful stove I've ever had in 41 years. It is a Jenn Air that has a 5-burner gas cooktop and two electric ovens, all in one unit. The gas burners... One is super fast heating, and one is real low to hold food at warm temp. The ovens... One is like a drawer, which comes up to temp in only a few minutes. We use this most for ourselves. The other (below the drawer) is full size heat and convection with multiple configurations of racks. You can take part of the upper rack out to allow for a turkey below but still fit a casserole on the upper rack. I MOURN the loss of this stove!!! But we don't have gas here.
We have an LG French door fridge with ice maker in the door in MI too. We do not recommend this brand if fridge, nor the LG dishwasher we have. Here at TV we like our Whirlpool Gold French door fridge and Whirlpool (non Gold) dw a lot. We bought Sears no-agitator washer and dryer for here. It's different than our front loader washer in MI (also no agitator, 12years old and still going strong--love it) and I think the jury's still out on that. It saves a ton of water, but I,m not convinced it gets the clothes as clean. Have water softener in both houses. Don't know why I think one is better, just my observation. Hope this helps. |

Oh, CFrance, it does.
When I decided to do a gas stove, I figured if I was going to change the stove, I might as well get all the appliances outside. I really didn't think about it being a homework assignment ![]() You have a 41 year old stove. That is extraordinary. The fact is, I doubt they make them like THAT anymore. But I will definitely look into Jennair for the gas stove. Ixnay on the LG fridge and LG dishwasher. (What is the problem?) What is the make on the washer/dryer? Thanks. |

We've had good luck from our GE Profile gas range. It has four different burner sizes which are convenient, plus the large fifth middle burner for a griddle. We have a Kenmore side by side frig and He2 stacked washer and dryer that are all very nice. The best appliance in the kitchen is the Bosch stainless steel interior dish washer. When we were at Sears buying our appliances , I asked the sales lady which was the best and QUIETEST dishwasher, she recommended the Bosch and she was right on. We love it. These are all four years old now, so who knows what's changed since then? Usually Consumer Reports magazine has a good track record with their recommendations. Browse their annual report issue. It may be at the library.

Our stainless steel interior LG dishwasher does a couple of things that I don't like. It sets up a reaction between the ss interior, the dishwasher detergent, and the ss silverware, which pits the silverware. I've researched this and found it is partly due to the removal of certain detergents from modern dw detergents, but also the chemical reaction from the ss interior, as stated above, is to blame. This has been such a problem that while in MI, I hand-wash the silverware. I have not had that problem here with the Whirlpool dishwasher, which is ss on the outside but not on the inside. Also, the LG in MI never gets the dishes completely dry, even with the heated dry setting. The ss interior inside walls are always still wet, and the dishes have a lot of water clinging to them. I can truly say I dislike this dishwasher. My experience with LG overall has been negative. The salesman told us the ss interior would be a god-send because it would never rust. What he didn't mention was that it would rust the silverware, and never dry either! I could go further on this and discuss the quality of ss the silverware is made of now and why it rusts, but it would take some time. suffice it to say that most moderately-priced ss silverware made from a third-world country (as most is these days), washed in a ss interior dw with modern day (no phosphorous) cleaning detergents is going to pit and exhibit rust stains. I spent a ton of money to buy the best quality ss flatware from Sur la Table and have been holding my breath, but they have not pitted or marked in my whirlpool dishwasher that's ss on the outside but porcelain on the inside, using Finish Brand tablets. But I've had to give up my trusty Cascade Complete because of the LG dishwasher in MI. Food for thought. |

Well, LG is off the list. I wondered what the selling point is of the ss interior.
And Bosch or Whirlpool move up the ladder. Thank you for your thorough explanation. Sorry about your MI dishwasher. That's a pain. |

Here is another angle for you.
I recently had Jim Risley, who owns Villages Refrigerator and Appliance Repair, out to fix an appliance that was "broken". I have dealt with many techs who do this kind of work and he is absolutely the best. In addition I got a small lecture on which appliances are quality and which are not. He knows what he is doing and what he is talking about. He is not shy about sharing this information either. He advertises in the Daily Sun in the Services Directory under Appliance Service. |

Oh he is exactly what I need before I purchase all the appliances. Do you have a telephone number for him? Thank you ever so much.

Best Buy is probably the best place to get good prices because of their national buying power. I went with a friend who bought a washer and dryer there. She and us and most people I know went with the Whirlpool that comes with the houses these days. We think they are fine.
Nothing is without some problem or another these days except for Viking and the uber brands. They probably are too.

We also purchased all new appliances while replacing the kitchen. I did a not of research and did not select just one brand. I did, however, stick with my Kitchenaid top-of-the-line dishwasher. Pleased with our GE Cafe oven and microwave. My husband had his heart set on a Samsung French Door fridge, so he got to select that. I agree that you need to pick what is important to you. Oh, and after researching thru Consumer Reports, I checked out prices at a few stores. I ended up buying on-line - and get this - no shipping costs and no tax! We saved a ton of money buying this way. Would order from these two distributors again in a heartbeat!

From"Appliance Researcher". I deleted your message (sorry). I can tell you I love my GE Cafe electric stove and microwave. It is truly a big step up from the other models. While looking at them both online and where I could actually see a model, I was sold. But I always really like my last GE stoves/microwave built-in units. The lines on the Cafe are really nice...The Samsung fridge we saw at HomeDepot, and we saved $500 by buying it online. (on just the fridge). Anyway, stay away from GE disposal units...our plumber told us we would be yanking it out in no time, so we followed his advice and resold it on TOTV and bought an Insinkerator. Quiet, extremely quiet. So, longstoryshort....we purchased stove, microwave, fridge from USappliance.com. Also, we opted for the 'white gove' delivery service, which means, they unpack, you inspect, and they take away all the crap packaging. The Kitchenaid dishwasher came from on online service as well, since these guys did not carry KA. Exact name I do't remember, but the phone is 800-299-9470. Same deal, no tax, no delivery charge. You can get their website by calling the number. As far as service, well, all service sucks anyway, so my experience has always been that you call GE and they send our a serviceman, warranty is always factory, not store anyway. With KA, well, I have had two KA dishwasher..the first lasted 20 years no problems, the second we left when we sold, and it was already running 15 years with no problems......Have not yet bought washer/dryer, but I believe I will go with a high end Whirlpool, since I have done some research already. No gas hookup on our homesite. We are in Santiago. And yes, my kitchen is fantastic!!!
