Many of you have heard that 10,000 steps a day 'keeps the doctor away'
If one were to pull cart/walk the average TV Executive Golf Course from the middle tees, how many steps would that be (for an average golfer)? I know that all golfers are different, so let's try to not make this a difficult question. Maybe state your answer in a range. Just a fun-type question. I wonder what the doc would say if you walked 10,000 steps a day + ate an apple, too ? <vbg> Gene ![]() |

My initial thought (for an average golfer) would be to take the yardage for that course and multiple it by 2 or 3 (probably closer to 3), remembering to add the walking steps between the green to the next tee.
So if an Exec. Course hole is (say), 150 yds. per hole x multiplier of 3 = 450 yards. 450 x 9 holes = 4,050 yards. If a step = 1 yard, then walking an Exec. Course would be 4,050 steps. But that seems too low. Any suggestions to my original question? Gene |

No way the factor would be 2 or 3. Even new golfers don't veer offline by that much.
For example Bacall is 1892 from the back tees (even if you don't play the back tees you have to walk by them) + lets add another 1000 yards for various non straight walking and walk between holes for a total of 2892 yards in the 9 holes. That equals 8676 feet or 104,112 inches. The average stride for an adults is about 30 inches. That equates to 3470 steps. 18 holes on the average championship course is a LOT more! At least 4.5 miles total. |

Russ,
OK, TV golfers. Strap on your pedometer and let us know your steps for playing an Exec. Course. I'm sure Russ is much closer to accuracy than my guess. Thanks for your help, Russ. Still hard to believe that -- using Russ' numbers -- you'd have to walk nearly 3 Exec. Courses per day to reach the 10,000-step daily goal. Or, alternatively, each day walk 1 Exec. Course and eat 2 apples <g>. Gene |

OK, I did a experiment up here in PA with pedometers. On my executive course of 1,550 yds per nine, 3 guys tried the same pedometer for 18 holes and 9 holes. The averge was 1.15 miles for 9 holes and 2.4 mi for 18 (we have 2 sets of tees to make the course 18 holes). say 1,850 steps per mile that equates to around 2,100 steps for 9 holes and around 4,400 for 18. On a championship course I have heard it is about a five mile walk or 9,200 paces. Add 10 % for all the trips to the bathroom and 3 putts......

Pedometer equivelant for golf is 136, slightly less than walking 4 mph for 152 steps. http://walking.about.com/od/measure/...quivalents.htm
The good news is that the 10,000 steps doesn't have to be done in 1 shot! It can be over the course of a whole day, so make every step count! |

Thanks for the research, folks. Still am surprised it's not more steps walking a TV Exec. golf course. I'll bet the 'average' golfer doesn't hit the green in 2 strokes. I would guess, overall, about 2 1/2 strokes, which would add to the distance.
But you met the challenge. All good research, far better than my 'winging-it' guess. Again, thanks! As has been said, it's 10,000 total steps in a DAY's time. So walk to the mailbox, walk the neighborhood, play golf, ...just keep moving! Gene |

Maybe we need a "10000 STEPS A DAY CLUB" here in The Villages. Thats something we don't have.

A "10,000" Steps a Day Club" might be too ambitious for many. How about this club idea: "Walk for Your Life Club." And have 4 levels of recognition: Rookie ... 2,500 steps a day (people could have fun with this level) Bronze ... 5,000 steps a day Silver .... 7,500 steps a day Gold .... 10,000 steps a day Just an idea to help promote healthy living at TV. I would be glad to head up this Club, except for one problem: I'm still just a TV wannabe (for now). Kathy, too. Save us a place <g>. Gene ps: Sandy, maybe you should start this Club. Could be a winner. |

Okay .... I give up.
I walk the Executive courses on a rather regular basis during the early Spring.... As I remember here are some representative readings, from a not so good golfer...I regularly have to go the rough and attempt to find the d@!! ball: Bacall - About 6000 steps Yankee Clipper - About 11000 steps Amberwood - About 7500 steps Really depends on how much you have to chase the ball!! ![]()
