Not wanting to bother the Tee Time Committee, I will ask here.

Monday: Par Three course; our foursome was told: move up to the white line you are next, don't go up to the tee box until the folks in front of you are gone. When the foursome ahead got on the green, we all moved up to the tee box, got out of the carts and started our warm up swings. Here come the starter obviously upset and asked if we played here before and we said yes. He then said "then you should know not to move up until the group in front of you has moved up to the next tee box". OK, none of us knew that, but a rule is a rule and I had no problem with that.

Friday: A different Par Three: Out comes the Starter and says move on up to the tee box. Confused, I sheepishly mentioned that the foursome was still on the green. He Said "When the foursomes leaves to tee box, the next foursome moves up to the tee box but does not hit until the foursome in front of you is off the green and has moved away in their carts. OK, a rule is a rule.

NOW: Does anybody know the proper rule. I could not find it in any literature I have.

When the foursome in front of you leaves the tee box you should move to the tee box so you are ready to hit when they leave the green. ALWAYS be ready to hit when it is your turn to hit.

I'll bet the original poster was playing on Truman. There are two parallel fairways for the first hole, one for Truman the other Roosevelt. The starters insist that you don't move up until the players ahead are off the green...possibly a safety issue? Not sure. Never have been told to wait anywhere else.

Different starters have different rules. Even as to when you can tee off. At Saddlebrook and Amberwood, they do not want you to tee off on #1 until after the group in front has teed off on #2. That keeps the flow going.

My understanding is that you do not go past the white line until you see the players moving off of the green on hole #1.

If a starter wants you to move up early let him tell you.

Nope. I don't want to point the finger at a starter, but the course was Sand Hill. I play Truman and Roosevelt quite often and those two fairways do have a safety concern and the starter is always there to monitor the two tee box's. I don't even care what the rule is, just would like to see it applied across the board. That was the first time since moving here I ever had a starter or Marshall say anything to any foursome I was in. I think the starter was misinformed and was just trying to do what he was told. He told us the reason was that if you go to ANY tee box before the forward foursome has left the green and the Area, they will feel pushed and complain back at the starter shack. His rule applied to all 9 holes. So we did in fact wait till the departing foursome was on the next tee box before we left the current green area. No one behind us seems upset and no Marshall told us to move up faster, so it is possible that he was right. I just don't think so.

Lets see if someone can come up with a concrete regulation or response.

This link may help. As you read down the section for Successful Start you'll find an explanation of the term 'designated point' which says when they complete the hole and clear the green. May have to find the training guide for starters so there's some consistency with the conduct.

The starter owns the flow of the first tee on any course, some ask you to wait, some do not. I always ask a starter when they would like me to drive up and tee off; even on championship courses. As an example, in MA I play a course where the first hole is 380 yard par four. The starter asks us to wait until the flag has been taken out before we tee off.

BUT I think this starter is wrong if they said do not go to a tee box on holes two through nine until a green has cleared.

That may be the correct answer. I can live with that.

I agree with l2ride, I do the same. But, sometimes the starter feels he can do what he pleases & the players suffer. For instance 3 weeks ago while playing Bacall in a couples group. The starter told us all to go to the first tee, "since were all in the same group". This was four foursomes. I called and talked to them and in short, AJ Brown is spot on correct. The starter owns the first tee for a multiple of reasons. Every course has a different type of flow and that is why the starter must decide.

However, after the first hole, the Marshall has the ownership so what they say about move up or hold off etc. is law.

I agree about the starter owning the 1st tee and that starter can also help the speed of play.

Last week I played Roosevelt and Sandhill exec courses. The starter at Roosevelt asked us not to move up to #1 tee box until the group in front had cleared the #2 tee box. Reason being was the course was getting backed up because of a slow group four ahead of us, which the ambassador also addressed. At Sandhill we were told to wait for the group in front of us to move away from #1 green before moving to #1 tee box so as to put some distance between us. In both cases we fully understood from the starters what they were trying to do and appreciated their communication and efforts.
