Great question Jim!

I do not have a good answer to that question for myself.

Obviously we're old and we will die pretty soon. Most of us don't know exactly when we will go so we've got to hedge our bets a little.

Some of us have younger spouses we need to provide for after we're gone, so it makes sense to stay in the accumulation stage. Others of us are trying to give our kids a leg up in life, that's a great endeavor as well.

There's no way we can spend what we have (without being wasteful) but we still can't bring ourselves to stop putting effort into the accumulation phase of life.

Switching from 'earn and save' to 'enjoy and relax' is a step I don't seem to have the ability to make. That's a major flaw in my personality I need to figure out.

I have a younger wife I must provide for after I'm gone, I have 3 young daughters I'd like to help get ahead in life as much as possible

and

"one of these days" I plan to take it easy and relax. One of these days I'll stop worrying about money and enjoy life - failed.

And to be on ToTV listening to a bunch of nutty libs spout bs certainly isn't the enjoy phase....

At 84 I am spending at a comfortable level but not throwing money around which I could never be comfortable doing. I want to leave some, but not too much, to my grandkids. I keep a more than adequate cash reserve and my investments continue to grow although a chunk of the growth is due to inflation.

All need to find their own answers. Every stock trade there is a seller who thinks it is a good time to sell and a buyer who thinks it is a good time to buy. "Take my RMDs early this year." Assuming you put the money into a TAXABLE money market. why not a money market in the IRA. RE: RMD check anything POSTERS SAY. The TAXMAN-but a pseudo name on talk of the villages said. Is the IRS allowed to laugh? RMDs are taxed at your highest tax rate. No long term gains etc. Needs to be done right. You can give the money to a 5013c charity and they get the full amount. The TAX MAN has been drooling over YOUR MONEY all these years. You can do some good AND beat the TAXMAN.

Nervous? Perhaps all are. Longterm-I call long term ten years. HUH? The S&P has tripled in TEN YEARS. I did SLIGHTLY less than that-SLIGHTLY

And what do you expect to happen after midterms and why?

ALL need to find their own answers. What to leave and to who, again you need to find your own answers. Woulda, shoulda, coulda, mighta. There are no do overs. Like it or not for all
the question is we are here. Where do we go from here. Cruel joke? Planning on climbing mt Everest at 84 or watching the movie? Pass the popcorn.

Pick your expected outcome, but have finger on that sell trigger
And if you sell, you think you’ll be reacting faster than the market will? And then you have to know when the bottom is to buy back in or you miss the recovery. Again, good luck, you’ll need it.

I meant, what do you think will happen to the stock market after midterms. The poster, not you, said they took their RMDs in anticipation of the midterms.

Not a subject that is easily discussed here, I will only say there may be an October event designed to wreak havoc and disrupt November. I was surprised to hear that today but then again not..

Where do you get the “over 5%” CDs? You must have had them for awhile.

Much like the money market promotional accounts, some of those are 4 or 4.25 for 6 months but then go down to 1.5 or 2. It's a kind of a pain but I usually chase the promotional amount, the extra $10,000 in interest is worth a little bit of headache.

Our financial institution is paying 4.40 APY for 12 mo, 18 mo, 1 yr, 2 yr, 3 yr, 4 yr and 5 yr. At our ages, we're not tying money up for the longer ranges, lol.
