Not for NOTHING but I would have asked for something better than tap dancing, like being able to get up off the floor without a crane.

The number one menu item my DH and I order at Giovanni's in Southern Trace - off of 466 is fried calamari. Not too many people talk about eating Squid and I don't ever remember anyone saying they were going "fishing for nothing but squid". So I put two and two together. (I'm the unlikely combination of Irish/Norwegian but I was once married to an Italian). It was a lucky guess. LOL

NOTHING but interesting stuff about Rommel. One of my two BAs is in History. And my law professors at the U of MN dug a lot into history in many subjects. |

USS COD HOMEPAGE
USS Drum – USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park I have met a few former submariners here in the Villages. None from the USS Cod though unfortunately as I would have liked to get a hat with that number on it. I did tour the USS Drum in Mobile Bay along with the USS Alabama. NOTHING but interesting. Will have to check out the USS Cod if I get up to Cleveland, Ohio. The submariners I have encountered here in the Villages were on nuclear powered subs. |

Ok, this technical talk is way over my tired brain. So I found this nothing less than very interesting and entertaining post on a website called Quora.com.
How did the term "squids" for US Navy sailors originate? Comment Posted by: Ed Covney, LCDR, USN, retired "This is a no shi++er: (Which means its the God's honest, truth.) During WWII, sailors called Marines (and only Marines) "Jarheads". After considering the term for a few years, the Marines thought "Jarhead" was a term of endearment. But about 15 years later and before VN started, new Marines no longer considered it an endearing term, so they started calling sailors "squids". From about 1960 to 1975, a sailor who called a marine a "jarhead" or a marine who called a sailor a "squid" were actually using code words for, "I want you to start the fight". On amphibious ships (ships that taxied marines to their battle zones), an odd thing happened. Marines would bar room battle with (not against) their ship-mate sailors, and sailors likewise stood with their ship-mate marines. From about 1980 on, both terms became universal terms of endearment for all marines and sailors with a sense of humor. Now that I've been retired for 28 years, I never call marine buddies jarheads unless we're sitting at a bar and it's the jarhead's turn to buy. Likewise, he'll never call me a squid, unless it's my turn."

But what does Squid mean (a calamari?) and where did that word come from? Here is one opinion:
I had a website with a definition that seemed right to me but now I misplaced it. But here is one reasonable sounding def that I posted from Squids, Jarheads, Grunts, and Other Military Colloquialisms Squid Generally what members of the other branches call Navy sailors. The closest thing to a viable explanation of the origin I could find is “squid” as it applies to inexperienced motorcyclists. Squids (the aquatic animal) can swim fast in a straight line, but like an inexperienced motorcyclist, has trouble changing direction quickly. The connection appears to from back in the 60s, when sailors on the West Coast would buy fresh-off-the-boat Japanese motorcycles without any real riding experience, and ride around while schnockered. Damn sailors." And what about jarhead (a head that looks like a jar?) and where did that word come from? Here is nothing but 6 or 7 differing opinions: http://www.experts123.com/q/where-do...come-from.html
