I found this plant growing in my yard. We didn't plant it. It just just started growing wild. Does anyone know what it is? Is it an onion?

That's an invasive orchid plant, the Chinese Crown Orchid. They're basically weeds and will grow just about anywhere, with no care necessary. They eventually produce tiny (pinky-nail) sized orchid flowers that stick out of long spindly stems. You can cultivate them, or you can pull them out, however you wish. As you can see from the "child" bulbs attached, they WILL eventually take over your garden if you let them.

Thank you! We found one in our yard as well. I thought it was a Sago Palm pup/bulb and have been tending to it for a few weeks now. 🤪😂😂

I was interested and looked it up online, Hyacinth Orchid, Chinese Ground Orchid, strong roots. if this is the same weed/plant it is being sold in 5 carts Price: $13.97. If it is the same item, it's not a bad looking plant, but what do I know I'm a New Yorker.

Sago palm is extremely toxic. It goes by another name too. The female plant has red kernels on a thing that looks like a corn cob that grows at the base . Very tempting for a child or dog. My vet told me it is one of the most toxic plants in FL. It is sold in Home Depot with nothing on it saying how bad it is. All parts of the plant are dangerous to touch and deal with. Cost me over $2000 when my dog grabbed a seed and swallowed it. We were able to get her to vomit, but she ended up having to spend 3-4 days up at Gainesville EMS hospital to make sure her liver enzymes were ok. Plant was removed ASAP.

I would plant it in a pot, then you can enjoy it without it becoming a problem.

This is excellent information to share. Thank you so much because we have dogs and I want to steer clear of anything toxic to them. The fact that the plant is invasive does mean it should be planted in a pot but now you have to make sure the pot is up on a shelf so the dogs can’t get to it. Why not just keep a pet rattlesnake while I’m at it?

The plant you are referring to is The Coontie (Zamia integrifolia) is a prehistoric shrub indigenous to Florida. As the only cycad native to North America, it dates back to prehistoric times. This slow-growing evergreen resembles a small palm and typically reaches about 3 to 4 feet in height and 3 to 5 feet in width. Coontie is highly adaptable, tolerating conditions from full sun to full shade, and is known for its resilience, making it a nearly indestructible plant suitable for various landscapes. The "cone" blooms at the shrub's base.
Fossils of this plant have been discovered in areas that were once Pangea.

I have seen several of them popping up lately in the yard. The roots are strong and it is hard to pull out unless you water the soil around them first.

Just fyi, in the last two days I have found Cuban tree frogs in my yard. They are invasive and toxic as well. Not sure where they came from and how to get rid of them. There is a pond behind my home but I have never seen them before. They are also supposed to be nocturnal so I don't know why I am seeing them during the day.

Far as New Yorker, when my parents bought their home, everyone declared war on dandelions. My grandmother, noticed they are pretty. Typical, my lawn is greener than your lawn is well NUTS.
