Default Tiger Woods

It was so great to see that Tiger Woods decided to play a practice round today. I was watching the Golf Channel this afternoon when his Royal Highness decided he would play a practice round at the PGA. One would have thought HRH was really that because from the time he got out of his car and went to the practice area for probably 45 minutes or more the cameras were all over him. We never saw one other golfer playing his practice round.

It is my understanding that the PGA Tour granted HRH an exemption to the 3 day rule to back out of a tournament. He need only show up tomorrow morning at 8:30 if he decides he wants to play.

If he decides he is not ready to play, probably based on how he plays his round today what he is doing is not allowing someone who really wants to play and is the next in line a chance to compete.

John Huh is the first alternate. He is at the course, practicing, and can be added to the field up to Tiger's start time if he withdraws.

One year at The Players, we had a player withdraw on the first tee. The first alternate was at the range, all warmed up, and just had to run about 200 yards to the tee when called.

So, Woods simple presence by itself does not prevent an alternate from getting in if Woods can't go.

When another player has accomplished what Tiger has accomplished, that player will get as much coverage as Tiger. When someone else is on the brink of becoming the greatest player in the history of the sport, the networks will pay just as much attention to him.

When Arnold Palmer was setting all kind of records, he got the most coverage. when Jack Nicklaus was on his way to becoming the game's great player ever, he got more coverage than anyone else.

The media covers Tiger more then the others because more people are interested in knowing about everything he does.

Tiger Woods has done more for the game of golf than possibly any person that has ever lived. An argument can be made that he is the greatest golfer in history. That is why he gets the most coverage.

If John Huh gets to play in the PGA Championship it won't be news. If John Huh wins, it will be a huge story, but it won't change anything.

If Tiger plays and wins, it will be another step to his confirming his status of the greatest ever. It will be another step toward breaking the record for most wins and most majors won. There is no one else in golf who has any chance of doing anything like that.

The closest is Phil Mickelson who, if he wins a US Open would become only the sixth player to have won all four majors. But even that would pale in comparison to what Tiger has accomplished and what he has the capability of possibly accomplishing.

The thing about Tiger is that people who have no interest or a passing interest in golf have an interest in Tiger. He brings a whole new audience to the game.

I agree.

The networks that cover major sporting events know that the diehard fans will watch pretty much regardless of how it is covered. So, to boost their viewership, they try to draw in the more casual fans. The casual fans are more interested in seeing the big name players rather than lesser known ones. Sure, there are some who do not want to watch Tiger due to events in his past personal life or his demeanor while he plays, but he still draws huge galleries.

the whole article....you seem to have misplaced the part that 6(count them....SIX)other players not named Tiger also were given the same extension.

It's fine you don't care for him as I don't really either, but providing false information through intended omission is wrong on so many levels.

No insult intended and since it's okay for this poster to imply that Mr. Woods is receiving special treatment not accorded others I thought someone should point out that it's not true. I might be concluded that the initiator of this post were stirring the pot....let's hope they just didn't bother to get the whole story due to intense dislike for Woods.

I prefer unbiased posts, but I guess it's a tough sell...honesty that is...

Excellent post Dr. Winston, and let's not forget the spectator money this man brings to the tour!
