I know what you mean and I'm not even from NY. Back when bagels crossed over from Jewish Deli to mainstream-- well, let's just say that oft times, something got lost in the translation.

It looks like there are no Gandolfo's Deli actually in New York State or City. Isn't that ironic? http://gandolfosdeli.com/storelocator.php These stores are mostly out west. Utah has the most with a few dozen or so of these delis.

That's the answer Bogie!!; I thought I read when Gandolfo's was in the constructions phases that they were going to ship in the bagels from NY every day. Maybe I was dreaming that. I just wish it were possible to get a good bagel and crusty bread in Florida.
I love it here in the bubble and I'm not leaving, but "a crusty kaiser roll and fresh butter" mmmmmmmmm

The days of real NY bagels ended years ago! Sadly!

Is it true that Gandolfo's charges for a small dish of cole slaw and pickles that TooJays routinely puts out on every table with sandwiches? Stephen should take note what TooJays is already doing if they really intend to be seriously competitive with an established favorite in TV. And forget about next week. Some people give a new restaurant only one try before deciding whether they like it. Remember the infamous "Dog House." It didn't last six months and it wasn't because the food wasn't good. The prices were higher than folks in TV wanted to spend for a hot dog meal.

Bravo's is just OK and Paulie's Pizza is better, but to get either of them closer to what you get up north you have to tell them you want it well done. Pizza places seem to rush the pie out of the oven down here. If you look at the bottom of the slice without doing as I recommend, you see what I mean. You should see a little "black" on the bottom. Try it; you'll thank me. Next time you're in Paulie's tell them "well done"; you won't be sorry.

Default Questions directed to Bagel EXPERTS.

I would like to know what a REAL bagel is supposed to taste like.

This afternoon I had a Lenders bagel. (I don't know if it is a national chain or not) They are supposed to be kept refrigerated and they are smaller in size than some bagels I have had. These were onion and I toasted them in the toaster and spread with cream cheese. It was yummy.

I have had great BIG bagels and those that are really hard to bite through but not being a well versed bagel buyer I don't know which is what.

What are the qualities of a good bagel and how do YOU eat them and with what?

I am dangling something here and some gol darned grammarian will bonk my head.

I am certainly familiar with them now, but the nuances sometimes escape me. What is the best thing to buy, say, at a good New York deli???

When I was a kid they sold lunch meat and some salads at the butcher shop. I never heard of or ate a bagel until I was twenty something.

And probably New Yorkers didn't have mock turtle soup and Goetta.

There are a lot of things that are still unfamilar when I go to a real deli.

What is YOUR favorite thing??
At Katz's Deli on Houston Street:
Pastrami Club, a Knish, and a Dr. Browns Black Cherry Soda!!
