Scali is unique to Boston and in fact was created by the Scali family. Boy do we miss the trips to 24 hour Bova's in the North End at anytime of the day to buy Scali bread and a whole bunch of pastry. Such great memories.

We have made it here homemade but it is a two day process because you need an overnight starter.

The closest thing I have found is a "French Bread" at Walmart of all places that is covered in sesame seeds like Scali. It's not the same but there aren't any real substitues.

Here's a trip down memory lane for you Bostonians:

I don't know about your neck of the woods but where I live probably half the ladies here are Great Cooks I'm pretty sure by the end of the week you'll have a few loaves at your front door. If you don't I would suggest buying a bread machine and learning how to use it. I've made great reds in the machine as well as things that just need to be mixed into Dough and risen such as chollah, bagels and breakfast bread which is basically a whole grain red mixed in with a lot of nuts and raisins and fruit.

Actually had some one bring me back bialys and bagels . Oiy vey, so good . Decent bialys can be found sometimes in the public's freezer section. And yes I cook bagels and challah. 2 jays rye is excellent . Yahalla bakery for some goods . You can always ask Publix if they would make you something I don't know how customized they can get but also as I said above there are plenty of Great Cooks and bakers in Central Florida in our neighborhoods

Default Lard bread

To those who don't know it's also called prosciutto ring bread . And some Publix have been known to have it on occasion

Have a friend ship one down from “Ivarone brothers”, on Long Island. They make the absolute best lard/sausage bread I have ever had. And I’m Italian and have access to Brooklyn bakeries.

Scala recipe; sounds like a lot of work, but is delicious I'm sure!

My Father-in-Lw was a baker, it is an incredibly hard way to make a living and I don't think retirees would want to work like that, plus where would you get the manpower around here to run a bakery?

My Daughter-in-law also has a bread machine and makes wonderful bread and sweet rolls. Dr. Boogie, when you are on your feet again, get a bread machine, a good way to pass the dog days of summer.

Yalaha is an excellent german bakery, it's about a 40 min drive from The Villages, but it's worth the trip, they also have a deli that serves good sandwiches!!

Gio's is as close as you are going to get. His bread is pretty good and he has a selection of Italian pastries.

Yalaha Bakery is named after the area. Yalaha is an area in Lake County where the bakery is located and it is only a 35 min drive (not an hour) from TV
