Considering he works two jobs, it may be that he was just too tired to think. Personally, I'd like to give the guy the benefit of the doubt.

That is not an excuse......How did he get to work if he was THAT tired? Hope he didn't drive if he couldn't think!

Dee, I've been tired too, but a cashier who gets it the instant you look at the cash with a question on your face is not honest. If he'd waited till I questioned him and looked like he was in a stupor I wouldn't have posted this.

The amount may seem small, but if a server does that for a number of unsuspecting guests a night, think of how quickly it will add up for them in a week. We are definitely going down there this morning to get it straightened out. Check your receipts! So, what is the rest of the story?

Almost always, the server can't add a tip to the bill after you sign the ticket. The manager does that at the end of the day or in the next few days when he/she returns after a day off. The "hold" is on your card for only the food and tax. The manager also records the server's number in the system so the tips get reported to the IRS or shared correctly. If the server doesn't turn in the signed slip, he/she gets no tip and eventually the charge goes to VISA for just the food and tax.
Take the slip to Scott. He probably did the final charge and made a mistake. He's an honest guy. However if he finds your signed slip for that date and sees that the server changed your tip from say $11 to $15, he'll be watching that server very closely from then on. Maybe you'll get a free drink at the bar for your trouble to drive down there and let him know there's a problem at his restaurant. Let us know the outcome. Skip |

How do you know a heads up was necessary? I'm still waiting for the OP to bring the issue up to date.

UPDATE: We have been refunded our $4.00. The server who did this no longer works for City Fire. Apparently, she had been let go prior to our complaint.

I, for one, appreciate these threads where people have had a suspicious encounter with a local business. It's not damning the whole business but a reminder to all of us to practice vigilance.
It appears, in this case, that there was a very real problem and it was resolved... kudos to City Fire management for making it right and taking care of their internal problem.

I agree! I forwarded the complaint to CF and I am sure this will be taken care of. I would have gone to them FIRST!

The same thing happened to us at another restaurant here. We took the matter up with the owner, mainly to point out what might have been occurring with a particular server.
