"I believe", you said. That is fine. I say, I am not yet convinced of his existence or of his divinity. But that is for a discussion on philosophy.

Well said.

That’s a fact, and we don’t except one. Many departments in Florida a 100% volunteer.

I’m really sorry to read that one is tipping for a minimum wage - but I won’t. I don’t believe in that system. I will pay for service but not for wages - that is a different issue completely.

I wish people would stop promoting the common myth that the Federal minimum wage does not apply to restaurant servers. It absolutely does apply them. It is either paid by the customers who pay tips or by the restaurant that hired the servers. But all restaurant servers must receive at least the Federal minimum wage. That is the law.

The federal minimum wage for tipped employees is $2.13/hr.
With tips, must add up to $7.25/hr.

… or it is paid by neither and the employee suffers. The article covers this.

Sort of. The article claims that employees need to "confront" their employer to get paid, but this is not true. A simple call to the Department of Labor will correct the problem and could result in the employer being fined or worse. You could get fired, but if you are not even getting the minimum wage, you probably don't need the job anyway.

But my point is that Federal law requires restaurant servers to receive at least the Federal minimum wage. But even servers who know the law, will still tell you that they only make $2.13 per hour. Some of them are lying to encourage tipping.

A simple call to Dept of Labor… Have you made such a call? I wonder how simple it truly is and how protected the employee will be if the Dept calls the employer to make inquiries.

If I were a server I would either say $2.13 if that was my base rate or I would tell you to mind your own business. Why should servers have to take being interrogated and judged about their pay?

Federal law requires a lot of things that don’t happen. That’s why we have fines, jails, and lawsuits. Unfortunately, challenging a dishonest employer is beyond the reach of most servers. (Which is why we have unions but that is a topic for a different thread)

If you can't afford to tip, you should not be eating out at sit-down restaurants. Unless you have received bad service, it's part of the deal. 15 to 20%.

I don’t think so - I believe there is an attempt to download paying of the wages on to the customers, however, this can only be done if the customers is willing. I find this system open to all kinds of abuse and I won’t part take in it. If other people want to, that’s on them.

I have never made a call, but I have seen many employees who have. I don't know how the DOL operates today, but when I worked on Federal projects, employees who didn't get paid properly by contractors, would call the DOL, and get an immediate response and wage correction. DOL inspectors would also show up unannounced and ask employees how much they are being paid.

I agree that servers should tell people who ask about their pay that it is none of their business. But I am referring to servers who volunteer that they are paid below the minimum wage, which is spreading false information.

Again?!

YES, 100% of employees wages are paid by the customers! If you don’t prefer lower prices and a 20% tip then just automatically adjust prices up 20% and leave that higher amount rather than a tip.

Stereotyping in general is wrong but every once in a while the reason for a stereotype stands out.
