Default FL DOT Bulletin on Roundabouts

The following link is to Florida's Department of Transportations brochure (2 pages) on how to use two lane roundabouts:

http://www.dot.state.fl.us/trafficop...Roundabout.pdf

If the link doesn't go function you may have to copy and paste to your browser.
It is the best I have seen to date on how to use a roundabout.

About time ths was made available. Hope all of the tri-county law enforcement offices have them available.Great info, is it new?. Could not see a date on this.

Wonder if it is included in the VHA Golf Cart Safety Class. Also Think it would be a great item to distribute to all attendees at the new resident orientation sessions and it could go out annually to all residents along with the Resident Survey letter.

That diagram shows that cars in the outside lane can exit either the first or second exit. That cars on the inside lane should exit the second or third exit, but in the third exit should stay in the left exit lane. It is correct, but who in The Villages is ever going to do that? ???

Agree with that Jan. In realty most of the time I'll follow those rules but I'll creep into the outside lane to take that 'left' turn. As long as people follow the basic rule of 'don't go into the rotary unless it's clear' is followed then we don't have any issues. But up here in MA, where we have lots of rotaries, most people just plow their way in.

Went by an accident at the Savannah Circle yesterday (March 24) where it looked like the cause was one vehicle's failure to yield coming into the circle. Both cars were parked right inside the traffic circle while the drivers exchanged insurance information. These two cars parked in the circle sure presented a problem for others coming into it with respect to also not getting in an accident.

These cars should have driven up on the grass IMHO as to avoid other vehicles getting in accidents by their parking in the middle of the circle.

For the most part TV have complied and and started painting arrows for those dummies who can't seem to follow the rules. However even with those arrows I spoke to a longtime friends wife who seems to feel she is back in New Jersey where I think these roundabouts or circles as we call them started and where she thinks everything goes.

This is really funny when you think about it people just do what suites them whether right or wrong.

Regardless the best way to follow this is to do the smartest thing when approaching roundabouts and thats CAUTION!! CAUTION!! CAUTION!!

I think this describes lots of activities in the Villages.

Yesterday, I went to Space, Coast Stadium, in Brevard County, to watch the Detroit Tigers defeat the Washington Nationals. Around the stadium they have built many new roads with "rounders". Before each entrance, a sign describing the lane and exit procedures in pictures, is installed. I think these signs would be of significant help in understanding the proper rules for roundabouts.

The FL DOT instructions are absolutely clear and a no-brainer. Not that that means that we'll do exactly what it says needs to be done, though.... The first defensive driving instructor I ever had suggested that we anticipate that the other driver will NOT do 'the right thing' and that we should be vigilant and act accordingly. That is why it's called defensive driving, and we can do exactly the same thing in roundabouts!

Another accident today in a roundabout near Virginia Trace. When are people going to learn how to drive in a roundabout. Maybe TV should just take them away.

Sadly, the old adage definitely applies: "You can always tell a Villager. You just can't tell them much." Months ago, Golfnut posted a link to an outstanding video on roundabouts: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/eesc/CAE/des.../mpg_index.htm

For a few months there was much conversation about this topic with most agreeing that local laws were at best confusing and overlapping. The sad part, though, were those who insisted that they didn't care what the "rules" were, they were just going to stay in the right lane, the only sensible, safe, sane, and always legal procedure. :yikes: They could stay in the right lane all the way around a circle and pretty much to hell with anyone who didn't agree. :yikes:
