Default Wild pigs in the neighborhood

5 wild pigs are in the neighborhood, today. They are tearing up yards. Nothing gets rid of them...chasing, sticks, etc. They come right back. Anybody out there know someone who traps them and takes them away? We were told that a trapper will come, but you have to pay for it. Other solutions?

Well. You might, if you have a grill...

Do pigs poop? And who picks it up?

Yes, they poop after dark and then leave it to be blamed on the neighborhood dog walkers.

I would call Pelican/Heron exec course. Just last week they had someone round up the little wild pigs on the course. They may have hired someone or it may be an inside job and somebody will squeal.

Is your neighborhood one down near Pelican or Heron golf courses? I have seen wild piglets over there.

No reason that The Villages would pay for trapping them. The pigs come over (or came over) from Lake Miona wetlands and are now part of the wildlife in The Villages. As long as they have not hurt people, they are like any other wildlife here like snakes, coyotes, bobcats, etc.

Of course, you could always contact The Villages Administrative Office and make your case for having The Villages reimburse your neighborhood for the pig trapping.

Please tell us -- what neighborhood??
If you're in the area of the Heron/Pelican golf courses, they recently got rid of piglets.
Perhaps they just chased them out into surrounding neighborhoods? If so, chase 'em back!

It's easy to be cavalier about ferrel pigs until they are tearing up your yard. I suspect your attitude would change. Also, these animals are not indigenous to the U.S., let alone FL. Given your rational, if someone were let a heard of elephants loose in The Villages, they would become part of the local wildlife and nothing could be done about it.

You can start by calling Sumter County Animal Services.
Animal Services strives to protect people and property from the dangers of roaming, uncontrolled animals as well as protect pets from the dangers of the wild and our busy streets and highways.

What is Considered Nuisance Wildlife?
Florida Fish and Wildlife Commision (FWC) defines nuisance wildlife as wildlife that causes (or is about to cause) property damage, presents a threat to public safety, or causes an annoyance within, under, or upon a building.

Thank you for the info, Bogie Shooter. Yes...Sunset Pointe...several streets that are near Heron and Pelican. The pigs keep moving from yard to yard. Very damaging to yards, because they are "diggers". Community Watch has been out all morning, but they just sit in their vehicles and watch the pigs digging. Then, when the pigs go to a different yard or street, they just follow them and keep watching. We only saw one man get out of his truck to take pictures. One watch ed the 5 pigs tearing up a yard, and he didn't even try to get them to leave the yard. They aren't vicious...you can walk right up to them.

Or....if you'd care to take a more "active" approach, you can grab a box or two of the ammo at the link below in your favorite caliber (I'm an AR-15 fan, so the .223 would be my choice!) and go to work - so long as these fellas are on your property, or you have the property owner's permission of the lot they're running around on. Here's a blurb from the Fla. Fish & Wildlife web site that gives guidance:

Hunting
"Wild pigs are legally defined as wildlife and are the second-most popular, large animal hunted in Florida (second only to the white-tailed deer).
On private property with landowner permission, wild pigs may be trapped and hunted year round using any legal to own rifle, shotgun, crossbow, bow or pistol. There is no size or bag limit, and you may harvest either sex. Also, no hunting license is required. A gun and light at night permit is not required to take wild hogs with a gun and light on private lands with landowner permission.
