I'm seeing more and more lawns that appear to be painted green.

Is this for aesthetics, or is it some kind of treatment I'm not familiar with?

Could be a preemergent or weed/fertilizer treatment. They color it to assure total coverage. Sometimes on golf courses in the south that do not overseed their greens with winter grass will paint the greens. That is for asthetics. Our courses do overseed.

Not pre-emergent. It is IMO a sick blue green.
It is a dye used by that loathed company, Service Smart.

I agree with Kitty it is a dye does nothing for your lawn. Some companies put it in their backpack and spot treat weeds with it, so they make sure they don't treat the weeds twice.. This is nothing more then a advertising gimmick, to get folks talking. She is right again it is being used by the one of the worst companies around.

At almost every golf course I've ever worked at, a vegetable dye was added to whatever chemicals that were being sprayed so that the worker could see where he had sprayed. I assumed that this was the same dye.

I don't know anything about the "loathed company," but the State of Florida sometimes uses Hydroseeding for portions of roadside that are damaged by construction, fire or other elements that damage the grass.

In these cases, rather than using dry seeding they spray a slurry of ingredients including fertilizer, tackifying agents, fiber mulch, and green dye along with the grass seed. Presumably, the green dye is for aesthetic effect until the grass grows through.

Perhaps the "loathed company" is doing something similar.

I think it looks like heck. I was hoping there was a purpose for it, 'cause it sure doesn't look good.

Kittygilchrist is right - I talked to my neighbor who uses Service Smart (in the process of firing them) and its just a "sick blue green dye" that they use. I guess they want to stand out from the crowd.

I felt the same way after seeing my neighbors lawn sprayed a yucky green. Now about 3 weeks later after getting cut then a little rain, it's one of the best looking lawns on the street. i assumed it was fertilizer and the color was to help the one applying it see if he missed any spots.

You assumed right in my opinion. I tried to answer the OP with an educated answer, but I have to admit the thought of any company using resources and product and manpower to spray lawns blue or green just to stir up conversation never entered my mind. And it still doesn't.

Well take it from me, who has tried thinking outside the box and failed. Wallpaper is not the answer!

House down the street had their lawn sprayed green. It was odd color for awhile but looks good now

That is what I was told by the person applying it.

I am surprised at some of the comments about the company in question. We use them and we also had the green colored fertilizer put on our yard. It didn't look so bad, probably because our yard was already greening up on it's own. I thought the ones that had it done in Feb were more shocking because it was so noticeable.
