For you golfers out there, I have a question.
Does buying more expensive golf clubs and balls improve your score? |

I'm cheap. Restarted playing golf about 8 yrs ago and refused to buy new clubs "until I got better"... wife would always beat me. I was using less than ideal equipment. I became so frustrated that I almost quit again. Minimal , but some, help with lessons. She finally talked me into a new set of fitted Ping irons. It made an incredible difference. BTW, what ball do I play?--> the last one I found.

Expensive clubs and balls will not cure the flaws in your swing. A teaching pro is a better use of your money. If your swing is generally sound, expensive clubs and balls will improve your accuracy and distance.

At a certain time in your game, and you will know when it is, it is a good idea to get some "good" clubs. Also I can tell the difference in some types of ball. Some feel like rocks when you hit them.

rshoffer hit the magic answer. Fitted clubs will improve your game. Make sure they all have the same shaft flex, the same bend point, the same torque, the same swing weight, frequency, kick point, lie angle, and grip size. All matched for your swing and your game will improve. Club heads don't matter much, but the shaft is extremely important. Get a decent set of cavity backed iron heads, some over sized woods and take them to someone who has the tools to set them up for you. I just go on ebay and buy the cheapest set of clubs with decent heads I can find and them set them up for my swing. I just bought a set of King Cobra FP irons for $90. A set with steel shafts, stiff flex and worn out grips. Bought new graphite shafts, grips, and rebuilt them to my requirements. They work great. Got about $300 in them total.

you are what you are and the better equipment and balls make little difference. How did all the good golfers in prior years do so well with the non high tech balls and clubs....because they were good at it. Granted some of the more forgiving monster drivers and clubs bring some improvement (for some).
For most of us a ball is a ball is a ball. Most of the hype is just that....hype....gotta have something to brag about to ones partner players. Good company....good weather...a good drink....a good cigar...and who cares about the ball or the equipment.....in my humble opinion. Over 97% of golfers are duffers or average. I am a duffer. I enjoy the game as well as the technicians with much less frustration. Life is too short to smoke a cheap cigar or sweat the golf score. BTK |

Here's a good one for you, I re grip and build golf clubs, A woman came to me age about 60-62 plays in the 60's for a 9 hole exec course, She went for lessons and the pro told her to have her clubs shortened, The 3 iron 1/4 inch and remaining irons 1/8 inch, Her driver increased 1/4 inch and the woods 1/4 inch also. No kidding that was it, I told her that it probably won't make a difference but she insisted that I do it, I redid her clubs and she's happy, . I think the new grips is what did it for her. She's happy and that's all that matters.
