After a $2 million report, the Marines are considering a change to prevent misgendering.

The gender identification is so important in English traditionally, in many languages there is a neutral term for gender in most cases, as the genitals of the person is not their most significant attribute. Not political, it has always been neutral in history. Just saying….

“The lengthy report, commissioned by the Corps from the University of Pittsburgh in 2020 and completed in 2022, points out that half of the military services already have done away with gendered identifiers for training staff. The Army, Navy, and Coast Guard effectively de-emphasize gender in an integrated environment,” the report states. “Instead of saying ‘ma’am’ or ‘sir,’ recruits in these Services refer to their drill instructors using their ranks or roles followed by their last names. Gendered identifiers prime recruits to think about or visually search for a drill instructor’s gender first, before their rank or role.” |

One doesn’t have to. “It” refers to inanimate objects. The English language uses “they” “them” “their” as plural - gender neutral, all we would need is a singular the same way which would be used when sex is not the most important thing. Eg. “The captain is at the door. Let “them” (except the singular form would be used) in.” Obviously, some terms, such as “mother” “father” would stay gender specific but we do have the words, “parent” “sibling” etc so all is not lost. We could just extend the language a bit as Shakespeare did.

Personally I DETEST all this politically correct crap. What has happened to our great country? So much time and money is spent on all this.
It’s stupid. We just got a Thank You email from a 17 year old niece. She signed it with the ‘she/her’ after her name. ….. I really had to rein in my thoughts and words here lest, you know. Don’t want to offend… |
