Default Wickedly Beautiful

Wifey and I are up in TV this w/end to check on our bring built home. 17 days to closing.

Were staying at the waterfront inn. Right now we're watching one of the best lightning storms we've seen in quite awhile. Lighting up the sky in jagged bolts, following by deep, rumbling thunder. It's been going on for at least 40 minutes, coming from the nw. Just plain awesome.

(of course, we hope that no one gets hurt, and no one's property gets damaged by the nature's show.)

My first question to my Sales Rep is who installs lighting Rods. I have not heard may feed backs on this issue.

I do know first thing for us when out home is complete it a trip to a electrician for a whole house surge protection.

Some people I hear have had bad damage as the lighting comes into the home from the sprinkler systems or other avenues.

Welcome to the Villages.

I just looked at the Spanish Springs Webcamera and there are about twenty people walking around and a white stretch limo parked at the top of Main St (to the south of Harold's statue) - at nearly 2 AM!

Just looked again and more (maybe 10) people crossing the street into the square (???). Just looked at LSL and nobody there as expected.

How come you people aren't in bed?

The camera had water spots on the lens, indicating it had rained.

I see the same white stretch limo at the Spanish Springs webcam -- maybe a wedding party out celebrating?

It's those hoodlums from Wildwood tryin' to steal things.

(Paranoia has set in. There was a lot of discussion awhile back about the new square being too close to Wildwood. I do not know of anyone from Wildwood who aren't just ordinary people like me. I like to go to Ace Hardware and the Tea Plantation and many other places in Wildwood. My attempt at humor was tongue in cheek)

AND to get this thread back on topic. Central Florida is the lightning capital of the U.S.

There is much discussion whether lightning rods help or attract. Surge protectors for the whole house are a good investment I am told. Village07 knows about them and will hopefully tell us.

Many homes have gas lines running through the roof. There have been many homes burnt to the ground here from lightning strikes. Thankfully, I have not heard of anyone who has been injured or killed here from lightning or resulting fire.

There is much discussion about what to do about it and a real lightning expert who has a column in the POA newspaper, who I hope will read this and share his information with those folks who haven't heard what is the best course of action.

You can use an electrician to install a whole house surge protector, or, SECO will install one behind the electric meter. You can either buy it outright or pay a monthly fee that is included with your electric bill. These surge protectors will not provide total protection from a lightning strike.

It was quite an electrical show, wasn't it!

I have lightning rods and a whole house surge protector on my house. Lightning rods aren't necessary, but I feel they offer a safe route for the lightning to the ground. One never knows where there will be a strike.
The lightning protection company also installed a breaker in our garage.

When our system was installed we had it UL approved which is done after all is set up. There are a few companies who put in the systems around here, but I would suggest you use one of the companies approved by the POA. It's really easy to stick metal rods on the roof, but the grounds are really LONG metal rods that need to be put into the ground.

Remember we get LOTS and LOTS of lightning in our particular part of the state, practice lightning safety during electrical activity...get off the golf course. It's better to come in than to risk severe injury and worse.

When I rented in TV last month, I was amazed by how many people were still golfing when the skies looked very threatening. More than once I would have a late lunch at one of the country club restaurants, and I didn't want to sit on the patio for lunch because the skies looked so ominous, but there were still several people out on the golf course.

Pooh, thanks for posting about your whole house surge protector and the lightening rods. Another thing for me to think about when I move to TV. That is why veteran TV residents are such valuable posters with their wealth of knowledge about their experience of actually living in TV.

Default Surge Protection/Lightning Protection

The term "whole house" surge protection can be misleading. If your concern is an indirect lightning strike you need to consider a PRIMARY surge protection device on your electric meter by your electric utility (SECO or Progress Energy) - OR - by a licensed electrician on your electric panel.

HOWEVER, you still need SECONDARY surge protection devices on your computer, TV's, mircowave oven, refrig, washer, garage door opertors, irrigation system, telephone answering machines, or any other piece of valuable electronic equipment. REMBER: LIGHTNING LOVES TECHNOLOGY!

If your conern is the far less frequent (but potentially more severe) direct strike to your home you need to consider a lightning protection system (commonly called lightning rods) by a UL "listed" installer.

For more info on lightning see the Lightning Matters columns in the back issues of the POA Bulletin.
