Kentucky's hunting season on the Sand Hill Crane just ended January 15, 2012. I was playing golf the other day and was told about this and I thought the guy was kidding me but sure enough it is true.

Y'all will perhaps have some fun with this one. Who would have thought.

There must be great sport in shooting one of those slow flying big targets out of the sky!

I can't (and won't) even read those links.

Why the heck would someone want to shoot these beautiful creatures. I had 2 on my front lawn last week...and all I shot them with was my camera. I was thrilled.

What kind of sport is that?

Please don't get on me about reading the links...I just can't.

I'm with you on this one. I have absolutely no interest in reading about this so-called sport. I have had many opportunities to walk up and hit one of these spectacular birds over the head with my 7-iron. Now, that is some sport. This site is like the rest that I visit on the web. There are good things to click on and investigate, and there are links to junk that does not make my day pleasant and happy. It's great that we all have choices as to what we perceive is "good reading".

Don't know about KY...but in Wisconsin (where there is a Sandhill Foundation) the farmers HATE the critters!! They make a mess out of the fields (both in excrement and the digging they do) and they're protected. They may look beautiful but they rank up there with geese (who also do damage in fields, parks and more...with their excrement etc.) Just another opinion here! Oh..just so you know...haven't ever been a farmer or hunter!

I understand that there may be a need to thin out nuisance animals and birds but I don't want to read about it. I am much too soft-hearted to enjoy an article about birds or animals being killed.

Kentuckians are definitely at the shallow end of the gene pool. I wonder if they eat the sandhill cranes with roadkill possum and have a few shots of home made moonshile as a before dinner cocktail.

Hey now...that is going too far Buggyone. I KNOW you MUST be kidding. I am not from Kentucky but the folks I know from there are polite, warm, genuine and very polished.

I agree, not much sport killing one of these slow moving, friendly birds. But what do you do with one after you shoot it? I can't believe they would make much of a tasty meal.

Now that is low!!! Don't know where you're from...but where I'm from they don't make such shots at folks. Even in jest it's not cool!!!!

I don't think they should shoot 'em just silence their vocals chords. They are the loudest thing of nature I ever heard VERY distracting on the links.

...disbelief here,....I can't believe they hunt these birds anywhere! I really like seeing them walk around,...it's part of what makes The Villages feel like home!

According to my farmer friends they are very tasty. The problem is having a oven big enough to fit it in.

I just read a news article that a legislator in Wisconsin has proposed legislation that would allow hunting of the cranes. It said 13 states already allow it. KY was the 1st and 50 birds were taken in the 30 day period.
