Default The Very Last Roundabout post.

The Secret to Negotiating Roundabouts

As one approaches a roundabout:

Imagine it's an intersection with the traffic light RED and a "No Right on RED": sign.

The light will stay RED and not turn Green as long as there are cars in or entering the circle and approaching passing in front of your car!

When the light turns Green..............
  • Cars can go straight from either lane,
  • Cars can only go RIGHT from the RIGHT lane (who'd take a RIGHT hand turn from a LEFT lane)? and
  • Cars can only go LEFT from the LEFT lane (who'd take a LEFT hand turn from a RIGHT lane)?

If everyone follows the rules there will be no issues....yeah, right!!

Unfortunately, NOT everyone follows the rules so.......

Two majors things to watch out for:

1) People entering the circle when you are in it; NOT giving you the right of way!
2) People going LEFT from the RIGHT hand lane cutting in front of you; when you are going straight!

Once into a roundabout changing lanes shoud be PROHIBITED!!!

What do you think?? Did I solve the problem??? yeah, right!!

A lot easier if, you enter from the right lane you HAVE to exit at the FIRST exit! You can't go past the first exit! To goto the second or third exit you enter from the left lane, and exit in the left lane. Remember, everyone on your right HAS to be exiting.
Think of it as if there was a wall forcing the people in the right lane to exit at the first exit. Nobody can cut you off! At the 2nd or 3rd exit, you make your turn and exit in the left lane of the exit because you can't get in the right lane.

we were in the right lane the other day and someone came from the left lane, cut us off to exit right. Go figure.

Happinow, according to the post before yours that can't happen, because if you were in the right lane you should have been exiting immediately, thus you couldn't get cut off. That being said I never understood them either, but his post was the best explanation I've ever seen of them (assuming he's right of course!)

Hi Tpop,
I like the idea of using the right lane only to take the first right. Although that is not the rule-- you can go straight through from the right lane-- it would probably work well.

However, stopping at the intersection and then not entering until the roundabout is totally empty would defeat the purpose of roundabouts-- which is to keep traffic moving.

Cars are supposed to stagger however, and not drive beside nor pass another car in the RAB. If EVERYONE followed this rule, there would be no RAB mishaps.

"The Very Last Roundabout post. "

For some strange reason I sincerely doubt it.

Sorry Regor, if you read the brochure you will see that is not correct.

Regor...that is how I drive the roundabouts. Sadly, that is not the rule.

If it were, and everyone followed the right lane turns at first right rule, there would be no accidents. However, that is not the case.

Our only option is to be fully aware of what the vehicles next to us might be doing...and I say MIGHT, and drive defensively.

The amount of misinformation in these ROB threads is troubling. There have been repeated references, with links, to the site where the correct rules are posted but some still persist in posting incorrect information.

So right downeaster! Regardless, accidents can and will happen with the correct rules. Accidents would be diminished if right lane had to turn at first right. But that isn't the rule, is it?

I know the rules...I just don't like them!
