Default Warning about Vegetables and fruit

There is much debate about Vegan, Vegetarian or not...but I wanted to let everyone know that a close friend of mine....who for many years now has been eating mostly in the raw and juicing- a true Vegan- has gotten some parasites, viruses and trace metals from the the raw fruits and vegetables.

She began feeling bad and finally found a doctor in Chicago who did many tests. Now her diet is very restricted but she is feeling better.

Apparently we have to be very very careful, you see other countries use untreated sewage for fertilizer and the soils have different parasites, viruses etc.

Now I am not saying don't eat veggies or fruit.... just be careful. You see my friend was very clean and washed her fruits and veggies fastidiously. She now uses a couple of drops of grape seed extract in the water to clean the fruits and veggies....her doctor wanted her to use Clorox a couple of drops....but she could not stand the taste!

Stay Well!!!!!

Very good info. Many people don't know that the risk of getting something to make you sick is highest on raw vegetables.

I used to love already cleaned veggie trays with the dip in the middle but sometimes they taste a little too much like formaldahyde smells.

I was thinking just that this summer when we ate the tomatoes from our backyard plant. At least I know what is on them.

Everybody is starting to figure out what "organic" really means.

dilute vinegar solution – 1 cup vinegar and 3 cups water – in a spray bottle.
The vinegar-spray technique works best for smooth-skinned fruits and vegetables. Broccoli, kale, spinach and lettuce leaves are best soaked in vinegar solution.

the dilute vinegar wash worked best, removing 99 percent of bacteria without any scrubbing. Researchers at Tennessee State University’s Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences also found vinegar produce wash to be effective.

Remember there is plenty of salmonella & e coli in meat & poultry.

Bottom line - your food needs to prepared and cooked properly.

Mom and I always wash our fruits and veggies but it looks like we need to do a lot more than that!

I'm going to go off post but I also want to warn you about chicken! One of the networks did a story on the nightly news a few weeks ago warning about the antibiotics in chicken. Its called the "Super Bug" and it affects 8 million women! Unfortunately, I heard that warning too late! So, make sure you get antibotic free chicken!! Hopefully, they really are antibiotic free!

Interestingly, the most recent listeria and salmonella outbreaks in US food have been from food grown in the US.

Default Caution everyone

Please don't over interpret the opinion of one doctor as to what is causing person's friend's symptoms. This does not sound like evidence based medicine and would fall into the definition of "alternative". Very restricted diets that can only be developed after doing many tests are potentially dangerous. Humans are meant to eat a wide variety of foods. Sometimes the supratentorial aspects of diet and nutrition overwhelm the science.
It won't make any likely difference, but... grape seed extract won't work. Go online and look it up. The"natural" websites talk about using grapeFRUIT seed extract mixed with vinegar (not water), never alone, to clean produce. It is the vinegar (acetic acid) which has some benefit. Grapefruit is also an acid (citric) but I have no idea if the acid is present in a seed extract.

Default Good info being shared!!!

Glad to hear of the vinegar wash. I will use it!!! Also agree about Salmonella etc in meat.

My S.I.L. is a huge guy and loves his Sushi....raw fish....not a good idea though! Some Sushi is not raw.

BlueAsh. she may have said grapefruit seed extact...not sure....my hearing and memory is limited hahahaha. Her diet is restricted to where her fruits and vegs are coming from and how they are prepared not in terms of variety...but at any rate her health is returning and that is what is important in her case. Also she had been to many many doctors and the doctor in Chicago is not an alternative doctor he is a specialist in Hematology- MD!

Is there an aftertaste when you use a vinegar solution? I have been wanting to find a better method of cleaning fruit, especially cherries and grapes.

exactly why I do not buy produce/fruit/vegetables that are from outside the USA.

Washing does not remove the pesticides, hormones and other chemicals that grow the produce.

Go to the farmers market and support the local farmers and get significantly better foods....including organic because they do not chemical farm like the big business farms.

Smile How To Avoid Intestinal Parasites

I found an interesting article online. Search: "How To Avoid Intestinal Parasites / Ezine Articles Submission"

Evidently, parasites like you more (and become more established in your system) if you eat foods that form acid, like dairy, meat, sugar and other refined foods.

On the other hand, parasites dislike foods that are high in natural fiber, like tomatoes, carrots, dark green leafy vegetables and fresh garlic. (Garlic supplements work too.)

As stated in a previous post, remember some of the incidences of food borne illnesses are the result of contaminated produce grown in the US....latest, Indiana grown melons, salmonella. No matter where the produce is from, we should all take appropriate measures to help remove all the "germs" we can.

A mix made of food grade peroxide and water is a good cleaning choice, too. NOT the stuff we all have in the medicine cabinet. You need to get it at a health food store, and be sure it is "food grade".
