well, sort of, to the premise that plant based diets may lower the incidence of cancer and possibly vascular disease.
Dr. Terry Simpson is bariatric surgeon from Arizona. I've linked to his website....browse around, get another perspective on how food impacts our lives and how excess food can impact an individual. I found it an interesting read. Hope you do also. Vegans and Cancer:A Diet of Plants Wont Prevent or Cure Cancer | Your Doctor's Orders Last edited by Moderator; 09-06-2012 at 10:21 AM. |

I saw a similar article with that same philosophy. I also want to share another thing that some may not have considered

For me this supports the "moderation, joyful" approach to food. If we could really listen to our bodies, we would "know" what we need to be eating and wouldn't have to adhere to a "diet". Still working on it, and discovering new options. Did a quinoa vegetable stir fry with shrimp last night and it was great.
Think I will be discovering more combinations when I get down and can access Publix organic produce and grass fed beef. Lots of fun. LW888

Well I guess U expected a reply from me
![]() This doctor is misguided and makes the mistakes many in his position do regarding the science. Others will be convinced diet has little influence on these conditions. You put your trust in where you feel the data is the strongest. I tend to believe Dr.’s Campbell, Esseltyn & Ornish and their perspectives. Dr. Simpson makes many unsupported claims, just appears to make bald face statements off the top of his head attempting to invalidate a highly recognized work in one page. Someone providing a rebuttal of The China Study findings should me more familiar with the material than this. He cites famous Vegans dying of cancer; almost everyone was a vegetarian not a vegan, big difference. He uses those two diets several times incorrectly. "That a vegan diet could prevent cancer is bunk. One need look no further than Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computer, who lived a vegetarian diet his life, and died of cancer." Hello Steve Jobs was a vegetarian not a vegan, but he just babbles on like he was. In my opinion people believe eating a plant based diet will reduce their chances of getting cancer, I doubt seriously many truly believe this prevents all cancers. Pooh what you may also find interesting is this Dr, is his love of cigars. Cigar Talk: Conversations of the herf [Paperback] Terry Simpson MD FAC Only $17 on Amazon. Steak and a fine cigar, "Don't bother me, I'm dying" Or is that moderation? This doctors primary business is the lapband surgery, not nutrition, in fact he has issues with that surgery, was found negligent of malpractice or wrongful death of a woman and a court awarded the husband 1.38M in 2011 for Gastric Banding Death...... Did a bit more research on his writings. His source on The China Study seems to be Denise Mingers, who is a researcher wannabe with an English Lit degree and a blog. She's a good writer but has no qualifications to analyze the raw data of the China Study. Yet, meat advocates often use her amateur analysis as "proof" that The China Study has been "debunked". Like a peer-reviewed study could be so transparently flawed that an English major, with no research training, could "debunk" it while Dr. Campell's colleagues and the whole scientific community apparently couldn't. Dr. Campell responded to her here .

I do believe Steve Jobs was a vegan...and his diet did not cause his condition, but it did not stop his condition, either. He also was on the Ornish diet for a while, but at that point, probably nothing would have helped him. Yes, the terms vegan and vegetarian have been used incorrectly in some instances, not sure who typed, but they did make at least one mistake. The information on the lawsuit ... Though cash was awarded to the deceased's spouse, the jury did find the couple also responsible for the death, and the surgi center, as well. There's info online if anyone wants to know more. I've read a bit of the doctor's web page. It agrees with what I've learned, what I've researched and with how I eat. I'm comfortable with my choices, as you are comfortable with yours. Have read a number of papers, articles, disputing the results of the China Study. Again, I understand what is said and recognize the scientific basis for the statements disputing the study. Not sure what Dr. Simpson's like for cigars has to do with anything except he likes cigars. Is he a heavy smoker? I don't know. Is it impacting his health? I don't know that either. Cigars remind me of my Dad, he enjoyed them, also. ..lived to 97 years of age. Personally, I don't smoke and wonder why someone might....but some of us do have vices... ![]() We can go back and forth on this till the cows come home, you will feel as you do about a vegan diet, I will feel as I do about a less restrictive diet. I will continue to say that good health is the sum of many things, food alone will not guarantee a long life free from disease, and by nature, man is an omnivore. With that, I'm off to get some rest, another weapon to help maintain good health. Sleep well, Jimbo, It does a body good. |

Organic Food Has No Benefits Over Conventional Food, Says Study
Featured Article Academic Journal Main Category: Nutrition / Diet Also Included In: Water - Air Quality / Agriculture Article Date: 05 Sep 2012 - 3:00 PDT Overall, organic foods are not nutritionally superior to conventional foods, neither are they safer regarding bacterial contamination, researchers from Stanford University School of Medicine reported in Annals of Internal Medicine. The scientists emphasized that they did not find any significant evidence pointing to nutritional benefits linked to the consumption of organic foods. They did, however, find "weak evidence" of higher phenol levels in organic produce. While eating organic vegetables and fruits does mean that the consumer has approximately 30% less exposure to pesticide residues, conventional foods are well below threshold limits set by regulatory authorities anyway, the authors explained. Crystal Smith-Spangler, MD, MS, Dena Bravata, MD, MS, and team carried out a review of 17 human studies and 223 other studies of nutrient and contaminant levels in fresh foods, including pork, beef, chicken, eggs, milk, grains, vegetables and fruit. Their aim was to compare the safety, nutritional and health characteristics of conventional and organic foods. Dr. Bravata, after carrying out a literature search, found that most of the studies were "confusing". Some of the ones that appeared in trade publications were not very thorough. There seemed to be no study with a comprehensive synthesis of evidence which clearly showed the benefits versus the harms of conventional and organic foods. Studies on organic foods have produced varying results. One in February 2012 found that organic rice may have high levels of arsenic. A 2010 study published in PLoS ONE reported that organic strawberries have more antioxidants and vitamin C but less potassium and phosphorus than conventionally grown strawberries. Researchers were surprised to find no nutritional benefits linked to organic foods The research team found no compelling evidence in any of the studies that they reviewed which demonstrated that organic foods are considerably more nutritious than other foods. Sales of organic food were worth over $26 billion in 2010. Dr. Smith-Spangler said, "some believe that organic food is always healthier and more nutritious. My colleagues and I were a little surprised that we didn't find that."......... Organic Food Has No Benefits Over Conventional Food, Says Study |

Really good list of vegans who , unfortunately, passed from cancer. Which is why I am always dumbfounded when I simply relay the vegans and vegetarians we knew personally who DIED no matter what they ate....all of cancer; all were treated at the best well known medical centers by top specialists. All led "healthy" lifestyles which included spartan eating habits and daily exercise. All were trim and fit...and thin. All died of cancer. Some of it has to be either genetic and / or environmental. Of course, the "experts" then say it is not genetic. Predispositions to various ailments DO INDEED run in families......while some families, no matter how much junk they might consume......remain cancer free. Go figure. Great post. Thankyou. I still stand by our knowledge of known vegans who died of cancer. They did everything by the book........and still succumbed. Why doesn't anyone look into the role pharmaceuticals play in these cancer deaths......such as birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, etc.? In other words, don't mess with Mother Nature. Excess estrogen does contribute to cancer. There is no eternal fountain of youth. Better to go natural. The dangers of hormone replacement have been mentioned but then hushed up. There also is the aggressive cancer gene that is familial; for which therapeutic mastectomy is often recommended....we also know someone considering that. One can be tested for the gene. Plus women do know their family history (grandparents, aunts, sisters, moms, etc.) NO DIET ALONE CAN STOP CANCER. What about all the radiation we are bombarded with? Lately, there is an awful lot of brain cancers in our town among cell phone users. What about those radar detector thingies that cops in patrol cars used to use and hold on their laps while driving? There are a myriad amount of possibilities in the modern world as to why cancer cells form in the first place. Heredity does play a role. p.s. For some of the men, does anyone know if they used designer drugs or recreational drugs during their university years? How can that mess up your D.N.A. I will agree with the healthy crowd that the ADDITIVES and JUNK in processed foods today is totally UNNATURAL........but so is the mercury in fish and the radiation in the rain clouds............. There are sooo many factors that MAY cause cells to mutate or go awry. Senior Citizen points out the EMF factor which I believe is HUGE. There are so many more waves in the air now than in days past that in actuality we are living in a "soup" that our bodies were never designed to handle and we will each respond in our own unique way. If you are drawn or resonate with certain types of information, then maybe that is the avenue that needs to be pursued to help keep you balanced within the "soup".
For me on a physical level, the bottom line is the immune system, which includes so many things, especially the gut flora. And even more importantly I believe, it would be invaluable for each person to stay conscious of the emotional vibration that s/he is vibrating moment to moment. For anyone interested in this type of study, there are 2 books by Richard Bartlett DC,ND MATRIX ENERGETICS and THE PHYSICS OF MIRACLES that you might find worthwhile reading. LW888
