Default Florida and county road numbers

Is there a rhyme and reason to the road numbering system here? We've been here about 6 months now, and know alot of them, 27/441, 301, 466, 466A, 44, 44A, etc. but it just seems a big random thing to us. Yes, we realize some are county roads, some are US highways, some Florida roads...

The "Best Hamburgers" thread prompted me to post this. A recent post there mentioned "441 almost to 200". Is there any way wthout looking on a map to know where this 200 is? I know Interstate Highways have a system, basiclly North/South roads have odd numbers that start out lower in the West and get higher as they go East, (I-5 in CA and I-95 in FL) etc. East/West roads are even numbered and start in the South (I-4 Florida...etc) Any thoughts on the roads numbers here?

And really? Do we need a 466 and a 466A? Why not just name them, or at least use a different number. I suppose if I understood the system it wouldn't seem so weird.

If you were running for President, I'd vote for you. But you're too logical, so you'd never win.

I totally agree. Dumber than a box of rocks!!! Like 466 and 466A. You are right.....If they HAD to use numbers instead of actual road names, couldn't they go to 467 instead of 466A. I get dizzy trying to remember all of these numbers!!! ~?#X%*@!! On 441/27, where does 27 actually start from 441?

While agree that the numbering / alphabet system in The Sunshine State is without rhyme nor reason ... after traveling extensively in the USofA, I don't think it is significantly worse here that anywhere else. Now, don't get me started on Marion Co.'s insane street naming / numbering system!!

BTW ..... 27 which runs from S. Fla to somewhere in Indiana, runs concurrent to 441 from Leesburg to Ocala.

I am trying to remember which state but I use to travel through one that had roads assigned by the alphabet A thru

I see little problem with the signage of roads here ,,,makes sense to me

We could do a much better job of naming these roads. How about:
Sunset Boulevard
Serenity Way
Street of Dreams
Village Drive

That is true for the Interstate system but not universally true for state or county roads.

The county roads are all 400 numbers and get larger from north to south. The state roads are two digit numbers, such as SR44, and also get larger from north to south.

US 301 is one of the original north south interstates and runs from Maine to Florida, as does US 1 on the east coast of Florida.

and most folks who have been here a while know exactly where and what using the system that is here and was here long before all us transplants came to town.

Sorta like in California where most folks know the freeways by name and not their interstate designation.

After one shakes the bag it really doesn't matter.

as the previous post stated. Most of the roads here were named at a time when this area was nothing but cow pasture and watermelon fields. Once you've been here for a while it will all seem normal. BTW C-25 in Lady Lake is part of the original dirt trail leading to this part of the country. commonly refereed to as "old dixie highway" Welcome to Florida

Actually they have names. For example, 466A is Miller St. or Miller Blvd. My GPS confuses me because it uses street names instead of numbers.

I don't know if this is why, but if you had a 466 and a 467 and you put a road between them you'd probably want to call it 466A
