My understanding is that it is to those two composers that we owe two things that are omnipresent in contemporary pop music:
1) repetitive riffs at the ends of lines that are SUNG (uh-uh-uh-u-uh-uh) instead of PLAYED. (This is why guitar, keyboard, horns aren’t often used as solo instruments in pop these days—their parts are being sung. This isn’t necessarily bad, but it is conspicuous once you are alerted to it.)
2) the use of minor scales closely associated with traditional music (and then pop music) from the Middle East, such as Turkey and Syria. (Again, this is not necessarily bad, but it is different.)

I tried to fix that. When I moved here in 2011 I listened to WIND 95.5 Classic Rock Gainesville/Ocala. I noticed their playlist seemed so repetitious, in 2015 I emailed a list of about 50 songs I never heard. Hunter, who is a morning DJ and listed as their PD was who I emailed it to and she replied thanked you. I continued to listen and for the next year and heard only one song from list. I emailed a second list in 2016 and she thanked me again, but I never heard any of those songs either.

In 2017 I bought a new car with XM free for 3 months and afterwards I have kept XM Sirius membership and I really like it a lot. In garage and lanai on my other-the-air radio I've switched to several different stations I listed in post #9 and for classic rock I find WMNO 98.9 Classic Rock Orlando has a different playlist.

The only song WIND played from my two lists was Judas Priest You got another thing Coming. The other 100 or so songs I emailed were songs like this; Aldo Nova Fantasy, Billy Thorpe Children of the Son, Zebra Who's Behind the Door, Giuffria Call to the Heart, The Cult She sells Sanctuary, ELO Telephone Line, Robin Trower Victims of the Fury, Jackson Browne Somebody's Baby, Uriah Heep Easy Livin', Sweet Love is like Oxygen, The Babys Back on my feet Again, Head East Never been any Reason, Whitesnake Still of the Night to name a few.

Ever since I saw Amadeus in the early 80's I've gotten into instrumental music, classical and soundtracks, etc. I remember buying Vivaldi Four Seasons on cassette in the 80's. Georgie Winston all his instrumental piano albums on Windham Hill, Laurie Anderson was a perfomrance artist but had a 5 album box set that I use to really dig. Phillip Glass a contemporary classic composer from Baltimore has several albums, he goes in the repetitive sound with other instruments overlaid. My favorite of his is the Photographer, especially Act II which has some nice violin work.

I guess you're referring to my youtube.com video library. Are you registered on youtube website and logged in? If so, I have it on share and you should see them. When you reach the link, you'll see 'history' and then scroll down and then 'watch later' and then the 'Playlists'. They'll be about 20 folders and click on 'show more' to see all 45.

Oh yeah. Like the op, I’ve been trying to expand my musical horizons a bit...and I’m finding more and more I really enjoy instrumental music. Classical, jazz, rock, almost any genre. Just enjoy the pure music without having to try to figure out and be distracted by lyrics.

This makes me sad. Mostly embarrassed for you. I actually -simplified- the OP's question, as opposed to over-complicating it, which is what many posters have done.

The suggestion (since you seem to have missed it, again - very sorry on your behalf) was that ALL other genres of music are alternatives to Classic Rock.

And then I even posted a specific thing for the OP to check out (and for anyone else who wanted to add to their musical experiences).

Again, so sorry that you missed the obvious and that your only contribution up to that point had to include a knee-jerk aggressive quip against me. Perhaps in time you will expand your horizons. I sincerely hope you do. It can be a wonderful experience.

You certainly haven't changed my opinion and recommendation:

ALL music that isn't Classic Rock, is an alternative to Classic Rock.

Probably not the answer people are looking for, but my answer to the OP's question would be to turn off the music and listen to the sounds of nature. I love classic rock, but I am also a curmudgeon and don't like to listen to the newer stuff. Give me classic rock, or give me the peepers (frogs) chirping and the birds singing.

Whatever you do, please don't listen to any disco, or even worse RAP, neither are music.

Agree on Rap, and Disco is great for dancing - not so great for listening.
