Initially, in its early years, it was hilarious and a joy to watch. Sadly, over the years, it gradually degenerated into unwatchable woke garbage.

That is longevity!!! Nowadays I only watch the intro, cold open and Weekend Update. I find the sketches so humourless for the most part. I miss funny people of the past like Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey and Kate McKinnon.

In general, most shows get stale because they are set to an original format and eventually there is only so much you can write about one scenario. The longevity of this show is that it is topical changing with the time, but this is a problem with many in our age range. Though the show keeps on changing many of us as much as we try do not.
If you're going to compare longevity, you cannot compare it to a situation comedy you have to look at it as 60 minutes where over the years the hosts have changed, and the show keeps up with current events.

I worked at NBC in the 70's and was offered to run my department on the show and turned it down because it was too time consuming, and I was young and had a life outside of work.

Watched it from the beginning...totally can't stand to watch it since it became so political sided.

It looked like Dana Carvey was there on September 28, 2024. He played a rather old man.

Loved Jelly Roll's 2nd song which should help many people.

I do find these new Seasons a lot less entertaining than the first years.
The show lost its luster years ago when it went too politically negative and lost good talent. Should be cancelled not 50th season. Lorne Michaels need to retire.

It will probably be around another 25 years. Loved by many people.

....and that’s because the viewership has accepted its mediocrity. The lights will flicker at times but the product is a shell of its former self. There has been talk that Lorne Michaels (80) is potentially stepping down at some point but it’s not his fault....it’s the network. There are so many limitations on talent, content and budget that it’s amazing he stuck around this long. His eventual memoirs will no doubt confirm this

Matter of opinion. SNL is very popular with the 19 to 49 years old viewers. It seems like a lot of its musical guests are also aimed towards that group.

Yup...because the numbers don’t lie, right?

Seriously, I have college age kids...they may check out the cold open on YouTube but like most of their demo, they’re watching the streaming services for real comedy. The likes of Chappelle, Sandler even SNL cast off Shane Gillis...doing unfiltered, uncensored specials on Netflix or listening to Rogan and other podcasters for the real deal. To your point though, they are watching but like most with a short attention span...they’re doing so in 60 second intervals

I still love SNL - especially Weekend Update and the opening skit. The other skits are hit and miss - some good and some blah. But overall, I enjoy the show. As far as being one-sided politically, I saw them make fun of Biden, Harris, Trump and Vance. They work with the material they see and hear from politics.

I see that Jean Smart had a big role in the series 24 which I have been watching. She kind of plays the same kind of character like she did in some of the skits the other night on SNL.

I agree that SNL makes fun of everyone no matter what age, sex, political party or class.

Never really liked the show, the humor isn’t that great.

I was impressed with last night's SNL show. The beginning part was outstanding with Maya Rudolph playing Kamala Harris. The whole show was good - start to finish.

That's a quite interesting personal story. I would like to hear more.
