Self isolation has led to some weight gain for me (I was eating too much bread and pizza). I've never been one to jump on any diet plans, but I am curious about the reported benefits of them. I hear a lot of hype about Whole30, keto, etc. Has anyone ever done these types of diets? Are they worth it?

Low Carbohydrates works great if you stick to it. Weather it’s Keto, Atkins, Mediterranean, etc..., they are all slightly different versions of low carb. The thing is, it can’t be just a diet to work. It needs to be a lifestyle change. If it’s just a diet, you will gain the weight right back as soon as you go back to old eating habits. Eat lots of fresh fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts, and lean proteins. Avoid root vegetables, and most importantly run away from anything with sugar and/or white flour. In addition to losing weight, you will have more energy and see a significant drop in both blood pressure and cholesterol. Good Luck.

My approach to diet is 1) I can’t go hungry, 2) I have to have delicious food. Otherwise, I will not stay on the diet (I learned that from many tries in the past). So I do both portion (calorie) control and low carbohydrates... not too low carbs as in Keto, or too fast loss at a time because at our age what will happen is: loose skin, hair loss and a lower immunity system.
I don't want to look pretty for the coffin. So health is first. I also keep a journal like Fitday on my iPad and start every morning stepping on a scale. It becomes a habit, like brushing your teeth. Personally, I keep in the higher but normal weight range, my face likes it best. Also as a portrait artist sometimes, I find skeleton or zero size people are not attractive to me. That’s what cancer does for free. My diet is mostly sea food, some meat (BBQed steak, lean burgers) and skinless chicken. Lots of steamed vegetables, almost no starch in any form. Berries and fruit for dessert. And I love my full fat yogurt and milk. The occasional glass of wine, or spirits. I celebrate all occasions anniversaries, birthdays eat the cake too... but with portion control, and calorie control. After a month or so you get really good at knowing your food calorie count by sight, and you won’t need to weigh the food you put in your mouth. Initially if it didn’t go on the food scale it didn’t go in my mouth! Same for drinks. Measured every ounce. After a month you don’t need to measure you will know your drinks’ calories by sight. Result: I am happy and on this diet for life. My weight goes up and down 2 pounds at the most in the long run. I don’t know if my diet would work for you. It is trial and error to see what you like to eat that keeps you healthy. But it’s worth finding out for yourself. Just thought I’d share. Good luck to you! I've been on a keto diet since November and it's working great for me. I've gone from 220 to 175 pounds without ever going hungry, and I feel great. Sure, you will miss the pasta, bread, french fries, etc., but if you are careful about it, you can occasionally have a "carb fix" if you really need it. I combined the keto diet with more exercise and the (near) elimination of beer from my diet. I use a web-based food/exercise tracker which is really helpful. I've now reached my goal and have introduced some limited carbs back into my diet. Instead of beer I have a daily glass of cheap red wine, which has health benefits in itself. I recommend keto combined with exercise.

Change nothing, apart from eating half of what you have been consuming. Simple!

If you can do it without going hungry. One of the benefits of low carbs is that you don’t feel hungry.
