I have worked nights most of my life and as any 3rd shifter would know the world clicks around day shifters....I am still working but I own in TV"s and will be full time fairly soon....Was wondering how long it took some of you 3rd shifters to get your night to day shifted back around where you felt normal again ?

Or do you still find yourself up all hours of the night ?

I worked 3rd shift for nearly 30 years, but on my days off, I would switch back to somewhat normal. The last 4 or 5 years I worked on call, which meant I could work 8 on and 8 off for several days in a row. I never really had a problem with switching sleep times. I could usually fall asleep in 5-10 minutes and still do most of the time. I also can get by with very little sleep for several days. Take a 15 minute nap and I'm good to go for hours.

I worked "shift work & on call" for 32 years. The older I got, the harder it was to adjust to the change of shifts. Worked many 48hr straight hours with no sleep. Retired 8 years ago and I still have trouble sleeping thru night. But being in the Fl sunshine makes it easier. You will love retirement here and no corporate B.S. !

This might be a little off subject, but I wanted to comment on my experience with 3rd shift workers. For many years I ran a 3 shift pharmaceutical repackaging operation. It seemed to me that it was a bit easier to hire people for the 3rd shift than for the 2nd shift. Not many people wanted to work the 3-11 shift. Over the years, the people I hired for 3rd shift seemed to be the type that did a great job, but didn't want management hanging over their heads telling them what they already knew. Most of them were from households where both parents worked, so when they got off at 7am they had to run home to watch the kids while the other parent ran off to work. Hard workers doing a tough job with a minimum of supervision!

Skip, Is this one of the excuses that you may use when we play golf? You know, I would have played better but I'm suffering from "shift lag".

Mr. Mac9 is a retired RN who worked 7p-7a for 33 years. It took him about a month to adjust to sleeping at night, and, now 4 years later, can't imagine that he was ever able to work all night. He says that it is mind over matter. He wants to play golf and all of the other fun things here, so he knew that he had to adjust.
