Default AC / Mold

I just moved in to TV last month. I was talking with my neighbor and told him that I turned my heat / AC system off to save $. He stated I need to run the AC to avoid mold in the home. Is this true? Seems like a waste of energy if not needed.

You can develop mold over time.

However, the reality is you will not have your HVAC off long enough for that to occur. Mold needs humidity to thrive. You will have your AC on by that point.

My system has been on for 2 years since I bought the house and have only been there about 8 weeks. When not there the AC is set at 80 and the dehumidifier part of the system is on as well. Electric bill runs $45-55 a month.

You may not get mold quickly buy your home will smell and feel damp and musty, your carpets, if you have them, will begin to buckle. Just skip one meal out a month to save money and leave your system on.
