I enjoy the local radio station WLVG so went to buy an AM/FM radio and was told that the AM reception is not good in TV. Are there any secrets to better reception? I live in CBS villa in Largo.

We get good reception for WVLG. We live in Tall Trees and my radio is just a basic $25 AM/FM model.

For some reason the FCC has AM stations dial down the wattage power at Sunset which could be the issue OP is referring.

WVLG is the only AM station you can get without static it seems. I like to listen to the Orlando stations and at times there's too much static to tolerate the stations.
At home in NJ I used to like to listen to my favorite talk shows with a transistor radio in my pocket and an ear bud in my ear and do my chores and projects while listening. Transistor radios are useless in TV. If I carefully dial the table top radio I can get the station most times, but the radio being stationary does not allow me the convenience of listenership I was used to. One of my biggest wishes would be for a radio relay tower between Orlando and TV.

If you have a smartphone (Android or iPhone), there's a free app called Tunein Radio that will allow you to listen to radios stations all over the world. There are hundreds of AM stations.
You can also use the website tunein.com to listen on your computer. There are about 50 AM stations in the Orlando and surrounding areas on this website & App. However, the Villages radio station is not streamed to the internet... I put that suggestion in the resident survey this year, as well as a Full PDF version of the Daily Sun. |

We get very good reception here in Buttonwood and, for that matter, from our car in and around TV.

I receive 640 with no problems. I also listen to 690 and 720, both talk stations, and have to move the radio around a bit to get good reception. Also, my computer and lights on a rheostat cause static. After sunset, I can only listen to 640. I have a CCrane2 radio that is better than my other radios.
I will give tunein radio a try. That could solve many problems.

If you want really good AM reception, go to E-Bay and buy a GE Superadio II.
They are the best AM radios made in a long time. If you can't find the II, get the III. Not as good but still great. They're big, heavy, but the batteries seem to last forever. Amost. And fine FM reception too. Great sound, too. Check 'em out, they're not very expensive. |

I have 3 Bose radios attached to external antennas I bought from Bose in 3 completely different areas in the house, and WVLG is still the only AM station I can pickup. I suggested on the survey that they broadcast in FM which provide a much better sound. I even receive great reception in FM even as far away as a station in Tampa that is the only station besides TOTV that consistantly broadcasts music I like.

Thanks everyone. I went and bought a Sony AM/FM today with a charging dock for my iPhone. At first it was a lot of static til I found the am antenna and now it sounds great! iPhone dock is pretty useless as you have to remove your phone cover for it to fit on the dock! It's not easy to get this cover off so doubt I'll be using that but the grandchildren will be happy to use it with their iPods when they visit!

I was a bit surprised that there aren't all that many with an am option!
