Funny, but I have lived in NJ for the past 25 years and driven in Europe quite a lot over the last 15. I can think of only one circle anywhere near me that has two lanes. It also has a stop light. The circle is intersection is 287/202/206 in Somerville. It's also only kinda 2 lanes. At one spot it drops to one lane, so if you're in the wrong one, you have to merge out.

I also have gone through probably 100 circles around SW Germany where we have a facility so I get there frequently. All of them are single lane. There are a couple near our England facility in Slough that typically have 4-6 cars in the roundabout continuously all day. It is quite busy. I don't see all these massive queues you folks keep talking about. Single lane.

A roundabout is nothing but a traffic light replacement. Treat it the same as the light at Morse and 466a. Always yield if someone IN EITHER LANE is in the circle. If you want to go right enter in the right lane. If you want to turn left enter in the left lane. If you want to go straight thru, either lane work. Same as a traffic light. So simple even an idiot should be able to do it.

The majority are single lane highways in the first place not, two or three lanes into one.
In UK you will seldom see a two or three lane highway funneled into a single lane on an approach to a roundabout.
If that were the case, the narrowing is way back from the junction.
Our roundabouts are two three lanes, and in some cases flowing left and right, (Hemel Hemstead) yet we have no problems negotiating them 'cos we 'follow the science!!'

The really complicated ones have lights. I know the one outside of the Copthorne Hotel where we have stayed frequently is, to put it mildly, insane. I will drive two miles out of my way to avoid it. That particular one is a circle pierced by four lanes and has 2-3 lanes circling in a whirly gig of chaotic motion. It's not because I can't figure it out, I have actually gone on it a bunch of times, it's because I'm usually jet lagged and now I'm on the opposite side of the road. I can just go the opposite way and not have to deal with trying to re-wire my brain to go the other way. It really messes up your instincts and takes a day or two and a good night sleep to get it sorted.

Right(outer) lane is for 1st and 2nd exits
Left(inner) lane is for 2nd and 3rd exits.

That is why you should NEVER enter a RB with traffic in EITHER lane.

Signals are nice, but I don't trust anyone with their signal on, anywhere. And for the driver who is stupid enough to come right along side you in a RB, they can't see them anyway.

Everyone should print this out and tape it to their sun visor. It's the clearest, most correct explanation of roundabout rules. And the part about yielding to both lanes is most important, and the one that people ignore the most.

Actually the Highway dept. are putting traffic lights on many roundabouts these days.
Really frustrating to sit and wait for green when the old system worked perfectly well.
Still, some jobsworth has earned an 'innovation' bonus!
PS. Do you work for Mars? That's the only good thing to come out of Slough apart from the A4!
