Mainly because that can result in accidents where they kill other people. I don't think a phone in the pool will kill anyone. The using a phone while driving is not something they can pull you over for (that is stupid) it is a secondary, like seat belts. If you get pulled over for running a stop sign, and you are talking on your phone with out your seat belt on, you get 3 citations. |

Why is someone using their phone at the pool poor etiquette? |

hmmm, so, if someone was just standing there and you ran into them, you would want to ban people from standing still?

Just because someone is annoying they should be banned? So, if you want to talk to a friend at the pool, that should not be allowed? Seriously? I am sorry people are annoyed, but really, the worst thing we have to deal with in our retirement is someone talking (on a phone?) hmm.... |

I have signs up in my treatment rooms to "Please silence your cell phones". Yet, at least once or twice a day, I'll walk into a room and the patient is sitting there, chatting away, and they hold their finger up, as to "shush me, I'm almost done"... I turn on my heel, leave the room and see another patient... When I return, they always ask "why did you leave?" I tap the sign and wait for the "I was only on the phone a minute" excuses... I've had some patients go thru this routine two or three times before I actually saw them... They are the ones who then get the lecture... I bust my ass to keep my schedule on time. Rarely does a patient have to wait more then 5 minutes past their appointment time to be seen. I expect the same consideration from them...

Poor etiquette would seem to be dependent upon normal expectations i.e. church, library etc. Obnoxious, loud, abusive, swearing, are judgmental and could be on the phone or not. If the person is standing still texting interfering, with normal movements, just try the normal civil "excuse me". |

I’m all for it, ban them in pools, golf courses, golf carts, cars, restaurants, etc…. People are addicted to the dam things and need to put them down and enjoy the world around them. The world was a better place when landlines were the only option.

It's fun to eavesdrop on somebody's conversation, I get to learn all about them while enjoying the pool.

All for it ! And, add to that golf courses, NO sitting at the T's and talking on your phone while others wait on you to just GET UP AND GO TO THE Tee. Let's face it, our convenient cell phones, that enable us to keep in touch with a seriously ill family member, or know when to leave for the airport to pick up a friend, however..... we pay a high price for that ! You can't go to a "nice" restaurant for pleasant meal without listening to people SHOUT into their phones all their private thoughts and opinions; some very embarrassing. People walking the isles of grocery stores, again, shouting into phones and ear pieces shoved into their ears so it appears they are shouting at themselves. I don't know the answer. I do remember the days when cell phones were not allowed ON golf courses, IN school classrooms, on IN religious services. I would not be depressed if those days of some kinds of "rules" would return. Fat chance !

I understand the writer, you have to have the experience of trying to read a book at any pool. People in the pool talking, fine, no problem, Children at family pool laughing and playing, fine, no problem, normal pool noises of splashing water, PLUS the non stop playing of the Villages radio station, no problem... but when you add the people who sit on the next lounge, or the ones three lounges down, who shout non stop into their phones, often conversations you wish there was someway to block out, well, the only answer is swim ear plugs, they do help. Good thing because I truly doubt that people will ever quit sharing some of their very personal conversations with the world around them. Personally, I prefer to do that at home, or away from others, but I understand I am very much in the minority. I have always been known as a cheerful, non complaining, glass half full person, and I don't want to change now in retirement. But...I find it so disappointing to have lunch with a friend, and have the entire time punctuated with "on, sorry, hold on, got to take this". One adult child, grandchild, friend, etc. after another, while they laugh and talk and I eat...LOL. I intentionally leave my phone in the car when I met friends for dinner, or coffee, or go to someone's home for a gathering. I absolutely DO understand those who have a seriously ill spouse, or may be waiting for a "lab" result, but honestly, these kinds of true emergencies are not the "norm". I'm sure with will draw many hateful comments as some are nearly physically attached to their cell phones, but I mean no disrespect to anyone, just one (probably the ONLY) person who would like to return to the "early days" of cell pones when they were not used to solve the problem of "boring sermons", or disappointing plays or movies, or a way for students to make it through uninspiring classroom lectures.
