We were at the Boston fireworks display one year on the Charles River. My husband, me and over 1 million other people were there. The Boston Pops were live and the Goodyear blimp was overhead. It was one of the highlights of my life. I'll never forget that Fourth of July. I cried during the fireworks it was so beautiful and so surreal. Getting out of there back to the train was a nightmare though.

I can associate with you comments. My wife and I were college students and went to several 4th concerts at the Esplanade on the Charles. The 1812 Overture always got me.

Thank you so much for posting the link!
I was wanting to watch the concert and fireworks but didn't know where to find it.

I used to live in the first block of Beacon Street, right behind the Esplanade, and could
walk to the concert. Or, we could go up on the roof of our building and watch the
fireworks from on high.

It was wonderful! So, I am happy even to watch it on the computer tonight.

Thank you so much for posting the link! This is a fav of my husband and he was very disappointed when PBS stopped a regular broadcast! Set him up with the laptop and he is smiling! Thanks for that, too!

I made the mistake of going in there once about 20 years ago. It was absolutely insane. We couldn't move. We couldn't get to the toilets. I did get to see Mel Torme from 200 yards away. We actually began to leave before the fireworks but it took over an hour to get to the MBTA station so we saw them from the train platform. After that I always stayed home and watched it on television.

Been there many times starting back when Arthur Fidler was conducting. Nothing like it, so awesome. I miss it, altho now I'd rather watch on TV than be in the crowd!

The Boston Pops 1812 Overture makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Unfortunately, we didn't hear the Boston Pops play the 1812 overture last night, leading into the fireworks.
The officials cut the concert short and went straight to the fireworks because heavy
thunderstorms were imminent.
From the news reports I read, the storms came right after the fireworks ended but not
before the crowd was able to disperse completely. Lots of people got wet, I think.
But, I enjoyed the fireworks display on my computer!

Luckily that was an outdoor performance! If the 1812 Overture is performed indoors, there could be problems you never expected!

My brother was a music grad student when they were perorming the 1812 overture. Tom's job was to fire a real cannon (small but powerful) in the small room next to the stage, at precisely the right times.

The first blast of the cannon was so loud in that tiny space that his ears started ringing and he couldn't hear the orchestra to time the rest of the blasts. He just hummed it to himself and hoped for the best - worked out pretty well.
